The last of his happiness dissolved, and Bing felt like he’d been dropped back into the real world. Normally he’d close up—he’d look away and say something about needing to meditate—but Walter was right. If they were going to have a relationship, he needed to open up more. He took a deep breath and tried to explain.
“I gave up being Red Wolf. I don’t feel him at all anymore.”
“You regret it?”
“Not yet, but….” He shrugged. “I don’t know how much of me is left. Obviously I’m not completely incapacitated.” No need to get him round-the-clock nursing.
“But you don’t know if there’s anything missing.”
Bing nodded.
“Let’s find out,” Walter said.
For the first time in his life, Bing didn’t hesitate when Walter offered him his hand.
