“All right. How about tomorrow you let me stay home from school, and I can help with the chores?”
I chuckle. “Nice try.”
“Hey, can’t blame a girl for wanting to get out of her version of hell.”
I ruffle her hair, which causes her to swat at me and duck to get away. “I guess I can’t.”
“I’ll forgive you this time.”
I raise a brow. “You will, huh?”
“Yeah, but only if you take me for ice cream.”
Considering how bad this entire night could’ve gone, that’s the least I can do.
“You got it, kid. Let’s go get ice cream.”
Chapter 16
Lark
Another restless night of sleep under my belt.
This is going to be a great look for me in a few days. Bags under my eyes, half dead from exhaustion, and constant yawning.
Every man’s fantasy right there.
My phone buzzes with a text.
Tristan
Three more days.
My stomach drops.
I’ll see you then.
Tristan
I hope so.
Unless you change your mind…
Or I do, but so far, I haven’t wavered—much.
I’ve run through all the consequences, but each time, I end up knowing I’ll regret not going more than if I do.
That is…unless someone finds out.
Chapter 17
Tristan
The chicken coop renovations are almost done, and I got a request to come see it.
The last thing I expect to find is Lark standing there with Sadie.
Just the sight of her has my entire body thrumming with anticipation.
