He wanted her, burned for her, and yes—lovedher, more than he had any woman ever before.

Dom didn’t know how much longer he could keep doing the half-life with her.

Hell, maybe it was time to go all or nothing? Or move to Alaska, to get away from her.

He was thinking about that on the last stretch of road before the turn-off to her complex. She lived on the south edge of town—the exact opposite of Hughes Heights. It was a good twenty-five minutes with traffic between the two places.

Except now. When traffic had all but died off.

When the two trucks pulled up behind him at a high rate of speed, Dom knew it wasn’t ordinary. “Madison, wake up. Now.”

It tookher a moment to dial in to where she was. Dark truck. Highway to her apartment. Her caveman beside her. “What’s happening?”

“I don’t know. Just be ready.”

That was the last thing he said. As a dark truck rammed into the rear passenger bed of Dom’s. Madison screamed.

He kept it on the road.

“They’re coming back. Hold on. They’re going to hit us again.”

They hadn’t been going very fast. She didn’t think. The speed limit where they were was only twenty-five. For some reason that stuck in her head. She had seen so many wrecked cars and trucks in her career. So many withblood…

But the other trucks. There were two. One in front of them and one behind.

And then they had them boxed in.

Just as bullets shattered the rear window.

Dom’s armwas practically useless now. It hurt like the devil, but he’d been shot before. He could deal—right now, he had to get her out of there.

They were in a residential area. Not the best area of town either. Maybe half a mile from Madison’s apartment complex. The attackers were already driving away. There was nowhere to turn around on this road now, but one block up—yes. They were turning around and they were coming back. To finish what they’d started. And there were two of them and only one of him.

His truck wasn’t exactlycover.

“Get out of the truck. Now. They will be back in seconds.”

She didn’t argue.

“Come on. My door. Let’s roll.”

“What are we going to do?”

Damned good question. “I don’t know. Just getting out of here first.”

The last thing he would let them do was find her. Not her.

Never her. Dom ignored the blood streaming down his shoulder. He’d live, if he didn’t lose too much. And if those bastards didn’t run them to ground like animals. His instinctsflared. He wanted to stand his ground, take those bastards down himself. Destroy the threat. But he wasn’t an idiot—he had her to protect. And he couldn’t take them down alone.

But he could get her to safety, and then go hunting.

He wouldn’t stop until he had those bastards in front of him. Made them pay for getting too close to her.

“We need to get to your car.”
