“There is a shortcut. An alley. I’ve taken it a few times when they were doing road construction.”

“Let’s go.”

They’d be at her place in minutes. He’d left his truck in the middle of the damned block. Someone from Major Crimes would find it eventually. It would take the gunmen a moment to realize he’d left it.

That would hopefully buy them time.

Unless they were watching Madison’s place. Then he’d have to come up with a plan B.

After that…Dom didn’t have a clue where to go next.

Probably right back to where they’d come from. Or head to Barrattville—hide her with the Barratts behind armed walls.

And then…he was going hunting. Those animals wouldn’t last out there long.

He could almost guarantee that.

No one threatened her. No one.

He was hurt.He was stubborn and thought he had to hide it for her, but Madison had seen the blood in the dim light of the truck. He was hurt and he wasn’t telling her how bad.

She knew it and she fought the anger that adrenaline brought.

He had her by the hand, but he was slowing. Did he think she didn’t realize that?

She could see the lights of her apartment complex just two blocks away. It was an eerie reminder of what had happened with her and Hope out there in the night. She’d been able to see the lights of the ER then, too.

Madison had her bag, she had her keys. She had her phone. She should call 911 or call Jake or Murdoch. She should call it in—they should. Why hadn’t he already done that? “Why aren’t we calling this in? Getting help?”

“I can’t guarantee who will show up out here tonight. We’re going to get somewhere safe, and then we’ll call in Major Crimes.”

“Where will that be?”

“Barratts. I want you there before we do anything. And we’re not going to be the bait in their trap.”

She understood what he meant, and she got it. They didn’t want anyone else from Major Crimes ambushed, either. “It would have been nice if you’d shared that plan with me, you know. If this little marriage is going to work—communication.”

Maybe not the time for jokes, but what else was she supposed to do now?

Madison was getting tired of running for her life under the cover of darkness and everything. It was bringing back far too many memories. This wasn’t even her first ambush, either. She just shivered and wiped at the dark liquid on her arm. Blood. Of course it was blood. She’d cut her arm on the broken glass, too.

“Remember this, Madison. Trustno onenow. How did they fucking know where to find us? That’s the question.”

That had been something they’d been stressing at Shelby’s tonight. There were a handful of TSP anyone trusted. No one was talking about what had been found tonight, either.

It was all staying between those who had been at Shelby’s tonight and no one else. Lila and K.J. and Bryant Naylor hadn’t been there. Charlie hadn’t even been there—he was busy dealing with something to do with his brother and sister over in Value, she thought.

Just Jake, Lake, Daniel, Gunnar, Miguel, Jarrod and the chief.

No one else.

She was really getting the feeling they were all on their own right now.

She had her keys ready when they got to her apartment. There her car was, just waiting on them.

Madison could see Missy watching her from the window. She should be okay for a day or so—until someone could get her. Madison had an automatic feeder, plus a spare bowl inher bedroom, and automatic water bowls. Missy would be okay. And…if something happened and shenevermade it back to her cat, her mom would make sure Missy was taken care of, no matter what.
