Chapter 19

Beckett

––––––––

Scrubbing a hand downmy tired face, I finish making some coffee and sigh happily at the first sip. Pouring another cup for Scarlett, I head over to the couch where she’s sitting hunched over the coffee table on her laptop.

“For the lovely lady.”

She glances up with a smile, but quickly darts her gaze back to the screen and clicks a few keys in rapid succession. “Thanks. Let me finish this up real quick first?”

Setting it out of spilling range, I slide into the spot beside her. “Of course, no rush. What ya up to?” Getting a better look, a grin takes over my face. “Oh, badass! You play too? I knew I had good taste in mates.”

She snorts. “Yes, because you had so much to do with the decision.”

Hopping back to my feet, I jog back to the room I’m sharing with Kasen and root around in the few bags we brought back yesterday. We still have to figure out what to do with the apartment; breaking the lease early will cost us a pretty penny, but it’s worth it. Got to find something to do with the furniture first though, because no way in hell am I hauling any of it up here; I don’t even know how the fuck they got beds in that damn elevator. I can probably work something out with Carson to donate it all to one of the project houses he’s working on, so it’s just a matter of arranging everything, and one more trip back to the apartment to grab the rest of my clothes and a few boxes.

Rummaging around, I withdraw my laptop and wireless mouse, returning to the living room and setting up shop next to her. Booting it up, I take another drink of my coffee, crack my knuckles, and prepare to settle in for the long haul.

“Send me a party invite and I’ll join you.”

“What’s your tag?”

“Biteme92.”

I watch her screen go black as she’s killed, game forgotten as she turns to face me. “How in the hell did I escape from the Midwest for it tostillbe such a small world? There’s no way coincidences can be this frequent. You knew, didn’t you?”

Frowning, I ask, “What are you talking about?”

Turning back to her computer, she sends the invite. As soon as it pops up on my screen-SavageScars has invited you to join her party- I lose it, quickly developing a stitch in my side.

“Oh this is beautiful.”

She loosens up when she realizes I genuinely wasn’t orchestrating this or trying to pull one over on her. “Really, I shouldn’t even be surprised by anything at this point. Next thing I know, we’ll find out that my old dentist was actually Malcolm’s cousin or some nonsense.”

“Ooh, I didn’t even think about that glitch. Don’t worry, love. Until we can find one willing to stick his fingers in a vampire’s mouth, I’ll play dentist with you.”
