“I’m wearing trousers tomorrow,” I grumbled, dropping my packaging into his bin.

“Why don’t we work from home? It’s Friday.” He winked.“That way you won’t need any clothes at all.”

“You’re trying to get me fired,” I said, eyeing him.

“No. Of course not,” he said, frowning as he actually considered the logistics of it.“You’d need to be written up a few times first. Then management would need to discuss your performance issues with HR and put you on an improvement plan. It could take ages to get you sacked.”

“Or I could infiltrate the entire building’s water supply,” I said casually, walking toward his door.

Her eyes went straight to the dark grey feature wall.

“It does remind me of the British weather.”

I was about to defend myself—it was a considered aesthetic choice, dove grey was timeless, the duck egg white was a deliberate counterpoint—when the doorbell rang.

“Charles, tell him we’re not in,” I called.

“Let him in.” Nika placed a folded stack of clothing into the drawer without looking up.“Perhaps Bad Girl will chase him off again.”

I took a deep breath.

Then another.

“Hello?” His voice made me take a third.“Are you all decent in there?”

“Would you care if we weren’t?” I replied.

“Knock knock,” he said, whilst actually knocking on the open bedroom door.

I pressed two fingers to my temple and covered my eyes.
