“Thanks,” he said kindly, rubbing his wrists.
“I’m Detective Larson,” she explained as she took a seat across from him.
What did she think he was going to say?Glad to meet you.He wasn’t glad. Not even a little.
“Sounds like you had a rough morning.”
“Not really. I spent it at the doctor’s office finding out I’m having twins.”
“Twins?” Her eyes widened as though she was genuinely excited.
Baz nodded. That was the extent of the information he would share without a lawyer. However, he didn’t ask for one. Not yet. First, he wanted to know what they thought they had. It was the only way to determine why they were looking at him for this.
“When is your wife due?” Her eyebrows lifted slowly.
If she’d looked into any of his information, which he knew she had, Detective Larson knew he wasn’t married.
“In nine weeks,” he said, not bothering to correct her staged assumption.
“You aren’t married, Mr. Buchanan.”
“I didn’t say I was. You did.”
Detective Larson’s eyes narrowed. She didn’t like to have the tables turned on her.
Good to know.
“Does your pregnant girlfriend know about your relationship with Molly Ryan?”
“I don’t have a relationship with Molly Ryan.”
“That’s not what I’ve been told.”
At least the conversation was heading in the right direction. Still, Baz didn’t offer up anything more. He was not about to give this woman anything she could turn back on him.
“How do you know Sonny Gilmore?”
“I don’t.”
“Okay. Then how do you know Molly?”
“I met her at Moonshiners a couple of years ago.”
“She was pregnant with your child, was she not?”
“No.”
This time, Detective Larson’s forehead creased with a full-fledged frown. “That’s not the information we have.”
“Sounds to me like you’ve got some bad info.”
She glanced over her shoulder briefly, eyes cutting to the two-way mirror on the wall, before she sat up straight and regarded him without the casual facade.
“So you’re saying you didn’t meet Molly at Moonshiners … is that a bar?”
He didn’t respond.
“You met Molly at Moonshiners,” she said, removing the question. “Then went back to her apartment, had sex. She got pregnant, and you then moved in with her to take care of her until the baby was born?”
