He took a deep breath, let the warm breeze move over him, and admitted what had been bothering him for the last few weeks.
“I think I’ve fallen in love with Logan. I don’t know when it happened, didn’t even realize it was a thing until recently. You’re probably wondering what Logan thinks about that.” He chuckled. “If I had to wager a guess, I’d say he’s terrified. It’s one step forward and two steps back for him every time. I can feel him pull away after. His full attention shifts back to Sam as though he’s done something wrong.
“He took her out tonight. Spur-of-the-moment. He doesn’t usually do that. I think Sam noticed the shift in him, too, but he’s closed himself off to both of us. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do about it. The thought of this attraction coming between Sam and me… I can’t bear the thought of losing her. I don’t know if it’d be easier to pretend nothing happened and go back to the way things were. I’ve considered it plenty.”
He sat silently, wishing he could hear Beth’s voice. He knew without a doubt she would have the right answer. She always did.
The breeze kicked up, strong enough to blow the roses onto their side.
Follow your heart. It never steers you wrong.
Elijah sat up abruptly, staring around. He could’ve sworn he heard her voice. His gaze shot to the trees, to the street. No one else was around. No one living, anyway.
“Beth?” he whispered, feeling his chest constrict.
Another gust of wind bent the limbs of the trees, but that was the only response he received.
