“I’m Mia, we’ve been playing phone tag.”

“Oh, hi.” I’d gotten several messages from her earlier in the week—when shock of all shocks, I forgot to charge my phone—telling me that Alex would like to send me and a friend to the spa of my choice with unlimited treatments as a thank you for sitting with Lexi.

I’d called back and explained to her that it really hadn’t been a big deal and told her the flowers were lovely and I didn’t need anything else. When I’d told Charli about the offer, she called me an idiot and slapped me on the arm. Playfully… I think. Although it had stung a little.

“I think you know my friend, Charli, or um Charlotte James. She said that she met you in—”

“Spin class!” Mia smiled widely. “Yes. I love that girl. I want to be her when I grow up. She always says what everyone else is thinking.”

That was the perfect way to describe Charli. “She does.”

Mia glanced over my shoulder and waved her hand. “Lizzy!”

I turned just in time to see an attractive redhead walked toward us. I’d noticed her when I walked in, she had a sweet, warm smile.

“Lizzy this is Sadie Burke,” Mia made introductions. “Sadie this is Hannah’s mom Lizzy.”

“Oh hi, nice to meet you!”

“Hi.” Lizzy smiled and then recognition dawned on her face. “Wait, Sadie, you were with Mrs. Garrett, right? And you sat at the hospital with Lexi?”

I nodded.

“She saved Mrs. Garrett’s life,” Mia added.

“I just did CPR until the paramedics got there.” I felt so uncomfortable taking credit for saving someone’s life. Because what if my efforts had failed? Then would I be responsible for her death? I didn’t want to think that way, but I think growing up knowing that my mother died having me had given me a complex.

“And thank God you did. I don’t know what he would have done if he lost Mrs. Garrett.” Lizzy motioned to Alex who was now surrounded by several women.

“They are like vultures,” Mia commented.

That had been my thought exactly, but I kept my opinion to myself. I was scared if I shared it, they would see right through me. They would know that I had a serious crush on San Francisco’s Most Eligible Bachelor.

Lizzy cringed as she looked back at both of us. “As amusing as it is to see Alex sweat, I think we should go save him.”

No.The thought of speaking to him in front of all these people made me want to puke.

My phone buzzed and I pulled it out and saw that it was Charli wanting an update on the situation. Her text could not have come at a better time. “Actually, I have to run.” I held up my phone, indicating the text was the reason that I needed to leave. “It was great meeting you both.”

Both women smiled and returned the sentiment as I set a stack of cards on the table, grabbed my bag and hightailed it out of there. Charli would be furious if she knew that I’d used her message as a getaway text, but I would deal with her wrath later.

For now, I was just happy that I’d escaped with my dignity and heart intact. Well, my dignity anyway. My heart was another story.
