“There was no car, Prez,” one of the brothers said, getting off his bike.
My hand fell to my hips as I stood in the middle of the front yard and glanced at the rest of the men I’d sent with him to find the car. “How’s that y’all? Someone took it already?”
Another one shrugged. “Or it wasn’t there at all?”
Fuck. She couldn’t have been lying about the car breaking down, but did she give me a wrong
location? Why? “Nah. Y’all either fucked up and didn’t know where to look or someone snatched it.
Did you look for tracks? Skid marks? Any shit?”
“It’s an open road, Prez. Why don’t we just make her show us where it broke down? Women are
bad at directions.”
Not Sia. This was another one of her stalling tricks. I pulled at the back of my hair, spinning back
to the clubhouse. I flew upstairs, pushed Viper aside—who had been standing guard since last fucking
night—and barged in. She was still sleeping, so I shook her. “Sia, wake up.”
She barely opened her eyes, her breathing low and short.
“Sia! Wake the fuck up!”
A frown scrunched up her face as her eyes opened a little wider. A little moan escaped her while
she blinked, and then she sat up, fear flicking in her gaze. “Look, I’m sorry about what I—”
“Where the hell is your car?”
“What do you mean? I gave you the location.”
“The wrong one!”
“No. I swear. I showed you where it is on the map. There was a gas station close by, but it was out
of business, and then there was nothing close by but your strip club… You know this town better than
I do. You gotta know where it is. I’m not lying. Just take me in your car or something, and I’ll show you.”
“So you can fucking run away?”
“No! I know it’s hard to believe me, but… How about you cuff me again and lock up the car all the
way? Have one of your snakes on my watch the whole time?”
I studied her face. She didn’t seem to be lying now, but that girl made me question everything, even
myself. “What’s in the car? I know there’s no cash.”
“Okay. I did lie about the money being in the car, and there’s nothing of value in there whatsoever.
It’s a piece of shit car. But if it’s not there, it means someone found and took it. Whoever went through the trouble to take it doesn’t intend to sell it.”
