“I flew here to see you, not Jessa. Although seeing her was a perk, of course. But I came to go on a date with you.”
His eyebrows shot up. He didn’t know what to expect, but that certainly never would have crossed his mind. So many responses tumbled around in his head.
“Wow, I’m flattered. Want to go on a date again?” No. Not that. “I knew it!” But that wasn’t true. “So how was it?” No.
“Oh.”
Seriously? That’s all you could manage? He mentally slapped himself.
“I’m sorry. I know that was really weird, but I wanted to hang out with you without the pressure of it actually being a date.”
I must be dreaming. There’s no way this is real.
He discreetly gave his thigh a hard pinch. Definitely awake. Here was a woman he liked a lot, and she apparently felt the same way enough to concoct a plan to get them to hang out. “I see.”
Jeff, get a grip!
“Oh, God. I just made things awkward, didn’t I?” She stood. “I’ll go. I’m sorry for being a weirdo.”
Jeff snatched her hand before she could walk away and tugged her down on the couch. She lost her balance and landed in his lap.
“Don’t go,” he said. Their faces were so close. He wanted to taste her lips. “I’m flattered, first of all. You just took me by surprise.”
“So you don’t think I’m a weirdo?” she said softly.
He leaned closer, and their lips lightly brushed as he spoke. “Not at all. I love that you did that.”
“Can I kiss you?” she asked.
He didn’t need to be asked twice. He leaned forward and pressed their lips together. Sparks went off behind his eyes, and his cock stiffened. God, this woman was gorgeous, smart, and could have him turned on in seconds.
Her fingers dug into the back of his head as she gripped his hair, and a groan tore from his lips. This wasn’t what he expected from the evening. But ever since she had asked him earlier that day to pick her up from the airport, he had been excited. Leaving her at Noah and Jessa’s place after dinner had put a damper on the evening, but now his heart soared again.
She pulled back and rested her forehead on his, her fingers still playing with the hair at the nape of his neck. “Are we crazy? I don’t live here.”
“You don’t need to live here for us to continue to get to know each other.” He pulled his head back so he could look into hereyes and tugged her body closer. “I was planning on texting you more anyway. I enjoy talking to you.”
A small smile played on her lips. “Good. Because I obviously enjoy talking to you, too, or I wouldn’t have tricked you into going on a date with me.”
He chuckled. “I would have been a willing participant. No need to trick me.”
She sighed. “So where do we go from here? I can’t move here anytime soon. I have work obligations and trips I’ve already spent money on.”
His heart flipped in his chest. “Are you thinking about moving here?”
“I think so.” She chewed on her bottom lip. “Is this moving too fast? Are we nuts to be talking about this? We barely know each other.”
He smiled. “I think it’s healthy to discuss these things early on to see if we’re on the same page. Why pursue something if we both have different ideas of what it’ll take?”
“That’s true. So I’m not nuts for flying here on a whim?”
“Not at all. I’m happy you did.” He paused. “I guess maybe that makes us both nuts.”
She giggled. “I’m okay with that if you are.”
“We can be our own brand of weird.”
“Deal.”
