“I can’t do this,” she said abruptly. She jumped up and grabbed her purse from where it sat on a table. Looked around and found her laptop.

“Jedidiah, what are you doing?”

“I’m leaving. I can’t do this.”

“You’re not in any shape to drive. Look, I get that you’re upset about the shooting but I’m fine. Adam had the worst injury but he’s going to be fine. Ed was hurt but not badly. Nobody else was seriously injured.”

Ignoring him, Jedidiah pushed Justin out of the way and went out the front door. Trevor followed. “Stop. We need to talk about this. What the hell is going on with you?”

She was at her car now, opening the door and tossing her stuff inside. She slid inside, turned the ignition and peeled out.

She freaking peeled out.

Stunned, he watched her drive away and walked back into the house.

“Sorry, man,” Justin said. “I didn’t realize you hadn’t told her about your service.”

“Like I said, it hadn’t come up.”

“Why did she flip out?”

“I have no freaking idea.” Sure, in hindsight, he should have told her about his military service but by the same token, what difference did it make? It wasn’t as if he had PTSD or anything. He’d have told her eventually.

“They want us at the station now, Trevor.”

“Too damn bad. You know what happened as well as I do. I’m going after her. Tell them I’ll be there once I calm down my girlfriend.”

“I think I’ll just tell them I couldn’t find you.”

“Whatever.” He shoved his friend out the door and locked up. Got on his bike and took off after Jedidiah.

Jedidiah wasn’t surehow she got home without having a wreck. He’s a veteran. A cop.The words beat a litany in her mind. He wasn’t safe. He wasn’t boring. He’d been an MP, for God’s sake, and apparently at heart he still was. He would always run toward danger, not away from it. She should have known. It wasn’t in his personality to sit on the sidelines and let others take the risk.

Five minutes after she stumbled into her apartment, Trevor banged on her door. “Jedidiah, open up. We need to talk.”

“Go away.”

“No. Open the door. I can stay here all night if that’s what it takes.”

Shit. She opened the door but didn’t let him in. “I told you to go away.”

“I’m aware. Too bad.” He pushed past her and stomped inside. “What the hell is going on?”

She had control of herself now. Barely. Crossing her arms over her chest she said, “You lied to me.”

“What? I’ve never lied to you.”

“Fine. As good as. You omitted to tell me you were a veteran. Not only a veteran but a freaking military policeman.”

“It never came up. It’s not like it’s a secret, Jedidiah. Everyone knows.”

“Everyone but me. So you thought that since you’d been a cop in the military that meant you could go after a maniac with a gun.”

“Sit down.”

She glared at him.
