Chapter Nineteen

He nearly laughed, except she’d scared the shit out of him. That had been a monster of a panic attack. Jedidiah, having a panic attack? It didn’t compute. She was the calmest person he knew. Practically impossible to rattle. Yet here she was having a panic attack.

“That’s because it had onion rings in it. Next time I’ll try to find another.”

“There won’t be a next time.”

“I hope to God not. What happened? We were talking and the next thing I knew you were having a panic attack. That’s what it was, wasn’t it?”

She nodded. “I haven’t—I haven’t had one in a long time.”

She looked shaken. Better than she had a few minutes ago but still shaken.

She sucked in a breath. He could actually see her pulling herself together. “What’s going to happen now?”

“Obviously, they had to postpone the trial. We should know by tomorrow at the latest when they’ve rescheduled it for.”

“Did they catch the shooter?”

“Yes. He’s in custody.” He didn’t tell her that he and Justin had apprehended the bastard. Something told him she wasn’t going to take that well.

“Who was it? Do they know?”

“Yes. It was Frank Moore’s brother. I don’t know any details other than that yet.”

“You shouldn’t have been there.”

“Jedidiah, I told you, this has never happened before.”

“Here,” she said woodenly. “You said it hasn’t happenedherebefore.”

Someone was pounding on his door. He tried to ignore it but when he heard Justin shouting his name, he knew he had to answer. His buddy was fully capable of banging on his door for hours.

“Just get it,” Jedidiah said.

He stalked over, yanked open the door, and glared at his friend. “Not a good time, Justin.”

“Too bad,” he said, shoving him aside. “The cops want us down at the station. You weren’t answering your phone so I volunteered to stop by.” Realizing Jedidiah was there, Justin said, “Sorry, Jedidiah. But Trevor here is needed at the station.”

“We already talked to them at the scene.”

“They have more questions. First of all, they want to know why you and I went after the shooter. Why we didn’t wait for the backup.”

Oh, shit. “Let’s go outside.” This wasn’t the way he wanted Jedidiah to find out what had really happened. Make that he didn’t want her to know at all.

“No, don’t.” Staring at Trevor she asked, “You went after him? You two went after an armed gunman? Why in the hell would you do that? You’re not trained. You’re not a cop. Are you crazy?”

Justin looked at him. “She doesn’t know you were an MP?”

Fuck. This just kept getting better. “No, it’s never come up.” He hadn’t kept it secret. They just hadn’t gotten around to talking about that part of his past.

“Military Police? You’re a veteran? You’re a vet and you never told me?”

“Yes. Justin was too. That’s why we went after him when the cops weren’t able to.”

“You’re a veteran. You’re trained as a cop. A military cop.”

He didn’t understand her reaction. She was furious. “Well, yes. Your military training doesn’t just disappear once you leave the service.”
