For a long moment their eyes met. He seemed about to say something, but instead he walked away.
She shut the door behind him and leaned her head back against it. She shouldn’t be falling for her boss. That was a stupid thing to do and Jedidiah was anything but stupid. But that simple kiss on his cheek had been anything but simple. It made her want more. Made her want to really kiss him. To feel his lips on hers, and taste him. To feel his hands on her and hers on him.
Which was not going to happen unless she made the first move. And she didn’t think a kiss on the cheek was going to do it. Not because he didn’t want to. The chemistry between them was a near-tangible thing. She’d seen desire in his eyes more than once. And she suspected he’d seen it in hers too.
But because she worked for him Trevor would never do anything to make her feel pressured. Nothing he felt would change their relationship of boss and employee unless she made it clear that’s what she wanted.
She was ready to move on. Noah was gone and if she was honest with herself, she wasn’t sure they’d have lasted anyway. She’d loved him. Madly. But Noah would never have changed his ways. The adrenaline rush was too addictive for him to ever quit undercover work. And even before that last assignment she’d had enough. She’d planned to quit that part of her job as soon as she finished this one last operation. And she suspected living with an adrenaline junkie when you weren’t one yourself would have been less than ideal. She still mourned him. Always would. But she was alive and wanted to go on living.
As for now, she wanted Trevor. She wanted to explore what they might have. To see if they had something more than just the very obvious heat between them. Of course, she couldn’t be sure if that’s what Trevor wanted or if he simply wanted something fleeting and fun. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing either.
And what if you get together and things don’t turn out so well? Are you ready to quit if necessary?
Yes. She hoped she wouldn’t have to but she’d do it if she had no other choice. She heaved a sigh of relief, knowing she’d made her decision.
Now all she had to do was figure out how to tell Trevor she was willing and hope that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. First things first. They’d never even kissed. An almost kiss was not a real kiss. A kiss on the cheek was not a real kiss. Obviously she was going to have to do the pursuing.
She thought about her dilemma all night. Dreamed about him. Very sexy dreams. Damn, when was the last time she’d had a sex dream? Woken up aching for a man? She couldn’t remember. And her dream wasn’t about any man. Trevor took front and center in that dream.
By the time she got to work she knew what she was going to do. She was going to lay it on the line and hope like hell she didn’t humiliate herself. She’d dressed with more care than usual. Jeans that she didn’t wear often because they were just a touch too tight. She’d been told by more than one man that the jeans made her legs look a mile long. She wore a pretty blue sleeveless button-down shirt and the new set of lingerie Angel had talked her into buying. Fire-engine red lacy thong panties with a lacy demi-cup bra in the same color.
Just wearing the lingerie made her feel sexy. It had been far too long since she’d indulged in her love of super-feminine underthings. At the last minute she’d added her favorite perfume, a rich, sultry essence that spoke of female power, sensual and beautiful. Whenever she thought of the fragrance that way she had to laugh at how overly dramatic that sounded, but that was honestly what that scent made her think of.
Female power. She needed it.
