Chapter Fourteen
Trevor and Jedidiahhad been dancing around each other for weeks now. For him it had started the first time he saw her, absolutely stunning at her sister’s wedding. And weeks of being around her nearly daily, looking and not touching, unless it was accidental or if she rode on his bike with him, was making him insane.
Had he imagined that he saw her looking at him sometimes with desire in her gaze? Was it wishful thinking?
Probably.
She’d kissed him, though.
On the cheek, dumbass. Big deal.
And he hadn’t done anything. Instead he’d walked away. What would have happened if he’d taken her in his arms and kissed her, long, hard, and deep, as he’d been wanting to do almost since they met?
But he hadn’t. And she’d come to work today looking incredible and acting as if nothing had passed between them. Maybe in her mind it hadn’t.
That day he tried unsuccessfully to concentrate but with Jedidiah so near it was impossible. There was something different about her today. She looked even more amazing than usual. Her hair was down, the deep auburn waves flowing over her shoulders and down her back. He wanted to wrap it around his hands as he kissed her. She’d dressed in jeans and a sleeveless blouse—typical of what she usually wore to work. But the jeans were tight in all the right places and the open top buttons of the blue blouse hinted at cleavage enough to make him look more than once.
Right now she stood beside him trying to decide on which tablet to choose. He nearly groaned at the scent invading his space. It made him think of hot, sweaty sex and screaming orgasms. He closed his eyes and cursed himself.Get a grip.
It would help if she stayed on her side of the room. He could still smell that damn perfume, but at least it wouldn’t be right there, tempting him to say to hell with all his resolutions about workplace romances. “Don’t stand so close to me,” he finally snapped.
“Excuse me?”
“I can’t think with you breathing down my neck.”
“I wasn’t,” Jedidiah said indignantly. “I walked over here to pick up a tablet.”
He gritted his teeth. She smelled like his best fantasy. He wanted to grab her and kiss her like there was no tomorrow. Strip off her clothes and feast on her. And not stop until he was buried deep inside of her.
And that was not going to happen. “You’re wearing perfume.”
“I often wear perfume. I like it.”
The only thing he could think of to say was, “I think I’m allergic to that fragrance.”
She stared at him, clearly knowing that was complete bullshit. “If you’d rather,” she said sweetly, “I can go out to the ranch and roll in some cow patties.”
“Thanks, but I’m not sure even that would do it.”
“Do what?”
Why did that sound like a taunt or a challenge? “Make me stop wanting—” He closed his mouth, ground his teeth again. Damn it, didn’t he have any control?
She moved closer. Now she really was close enough to kiss. “Wanting what?” Just those two words. She made them sound like an invitation.
“Not what. Who.” He looked up at her and glared. “You. Damn it, Jedidiah, I want you so much it’s about to kill me. I know I’m your boss and that’s totally inappropriate but—”
“Thank God.”
He blinked. “What did you say?”
She pushed back his chair and sat in his lap. Not straddling him. Just sitting there, smelling like sweet sin and twice as tempting. She put her arms around his neck. “Thank God. Because I want you too. And I didn’t think you were ever going to say anything. Or do anything to let me know you were willing.” Then she kissed him. It wasn’t sweet or gentle or tentative. It was full-out sexy as sin. God, she tasted like the strawberry candy she ate from time to time. With an underlying heat.
“You wore that perfume on purpose,” he said when they paused for breath. “To make me crazy.”
She smiled, a provocative tilt of her lips. “Did it work?”
“You know damn well it did.” He groaned and took what he’d wanted for weeks. He explored her mouth, tangled his tongue with hers, and drowned in her. She wrapped her arms tighter around his neck and plunged her fingers into his hair. She leaned into him, her breasts pillowed against his chest, and he could think of nothing he wanted more than to get lost in her. To take her now, to sink inside of her until they couldn’t tell where one began and the other ended.
