“Didn’t any of the guys I introduced you to at the reception call you?”

“Yes, but I turned them down. So I need someone else.”

“Why did you turn them down?”

“I wasn’t in the mood then. I am now,” she said, wishing she hadn’t even started this. “Can we get on with it?”

“What do you need a date for? Are you going somewhere?”

“No,” she said, gritting her teeth. “I just want to have a damn date. Can you help me or do I need to call someone else?”

“No need to shout,” Gabe said mildly.

She didn’t say anything, unsure if she could hold her tongue any longer. Shit, why was he making this so difficult?

Gabe laughed. “Just messing with you. I’ll set you up. I know just the right person. His name is Raleigh Douglas. He’s a doctor at the urgent care clinic in town. He’s a nice guy. You’ll like him.”

“Okay, thanks.”

“Answer your phone when he calls, okay?”

“I will,” she said, refraining from sayingduh. What did her brother think she was going to do? Ask him for help getting a date and then not even answer the phone?

She didn’t have long to wait. Her phone rang about fifteen minutes after she’d hung up from Gabe. Shortly after that she found herself with a date for Saturday night. Since Gabe had set this up, which meant he knew the guy and had thoroughly vetted him, she agreed to let Raleigh pick her up. Not that she expected trouble in Whiskey River anyway. Sure, there were scummy guys here but Gabe sure as hell wouldn’t set her up with one. And if one did happen to slip by she could handle him herself. Raleigh mentioned having dinner at Blue, the new restaurant out at the winery, which she hadn’t been to yet. After ending the call she did what anyone would do and googled him.

There was a whole spread about him on Whiskey River Urgent Care’s website. He was really good-looking, with blond hair and blue eyes. He didn’t look at all stuffy, which she’d figured he might since he was a doctor. She could almost see him as a surfer dude, except living in Central Texas that would be difficult.

She hadn’t been on a date in forever. She and Noah hadn’t really dated. They’d gone out a few times, but those were mostly when they were undercover. They’d just been together. Almost like it had been meant to be.

Until he died.
