“What is it?” Addy held her breath, awaiting the information.
“The guns. Razo is keeping two for himself and selling the other three to a sovereign-citizen group.”
“Sovereign citizen?” Addy’s heart fell, and she tried to run everything she knew about these groups through her brain. Basically the members believed anything U.S. government-related was illegitimate, and they rejected all federal laws. Not something Razo ever championed. “How did he hook up with them?”
“Dark web. He’s keeping it on the down-low, but I overheard his latest girlfriend talking about it to a friend.”
“Girlfriend?” Addy stared at Camila. “But he’s married.”
“Doesn’t stop him from messing around.” Camila pulled her collar up, acting as if she wanted to disappear behind it. “He often goes by BloodyFox as a screen name.”
“Appropriate name,” Mack said.
Camila grimaced. “Look, that’s all I got. I gotta go.”
“Before you do, is there anything I can do for you?” Addy asked.
“For me?” She gave Addy an incredulous stare. “Yeah. Arrest the creep. Make sure he doesn’t know I ratted on him and put him away for a long time. And while you’re at it, do the same for Zamora.”
She turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows. Addy watched her go, wishing she could do more for the young woman. To help her get out of the gang. Addy had offered to help before, but the only way that was possible was if Camila left the area, and she didn’t want to move away from her family.
Mack took Addy’s arm. “Let’s move.”
He led her back to the car. The moment she sat, she got out her phone, opened a maps app, and entered the address Camila provided. Mack climbed in and peered at her. “You had no idea about the sovereign-citizen connection?”
She shook her head. “But it raises our investigation to a whole new level. We have to assume, with their hatred of all things federal government, that the miniguns will be used on a federal target. The guns could be staying in Oregon or going anywhere in the country. The targets are endless. With three of the guns in the hands of the sovereign citizens, so many lives could be lost.”
Mack grimaced. “Makes me think of the Oklahoma City bombing of the federal building. Not the method, but that what happened in Oklahoma was in retaliation for the ATF and FBI’s handling of Ruby Ridge and the Waco siege.”
Her mind raced over the details. “Maybe the guns are staying in Oregon and this is retaliation for the way the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was handled here.”
“Could be. I’ll have Cam make a list of all federal targets in the state.”
Her stomach knotted. “Our office could be one of them. Razo could be looking to pay me back for investigating him and make it seem like a sovereign citizen did it.”
“I could see him thinking that way.”
“Other than our office, I think the most likely target is the Edith Green–Wendell Wyatt Federal Building in Portland. It’s like eighteen stories, and I think its offices include around twelve hundred federal employees in over sixteen agencies. A shooter could take out a lot of people at this location.”
“I’ll have Cam research the security there.”
“And I need to let Harris know. Plus we have to get the word out in case we don’t stop the guns from coming across the border.”
“We aren’t going to fail,” Mack stated. “And I’ll let Eisenhower decide who should be notified. Agreed?”
She nodded, and he got his phone out.
Addy’s phone rang, and Harris’s name displayed on the screen. Addy answered it.
“Got a call from Palmere,” Harris said in her no-nonsense tone. “They recovered casings from the hospital parking garage and lifted Zamora’s prints from them and also the garage railing.”
Addy sat up straight. “He was the hospital shooter?”
“Looks like it,” Harris said. “Tell me you got info on his whereabouts.”
“Just did. He’s holed up with a new girlfriend. We’re headed there now.”
“You’ll need the arrest warrant to serve him. I can get that from Palmere, but if Zamora’s at a girlfriend’s place, she’ll likely come to the door and refuse entry. I suggest you get a search warrant too.”
