Addy agreed. The law required if they needed to enter the residence of a third party where the resident refused entry and where the suspect didn’t live, they also had to obtain a searchwarrant. To do that they had to establish probable cause that Zamora was at the specified location and that it was necessary to seize him in the interest of justice. They could easily produce that information, and it would be good to get it in case they needed it so they didn’t have to walk away from the house without Zamora in handcuffs.
Addy cupped her hand over the phone. “Harris wants to know about a search warrant.”
Mack held up his phone. “Was just about to run it through Eisenhower. He’ll have a better chance of turning one around fast.”
Addy relayed the information to Harris.
“Let me know if it falls through,” Harris said. “I have a judge on speed dial who’ll come through for us.”
“Will do.” Addy took a long breath. “You should also know that Camila told us Razo is keeping two of the guns and selling the others to a sovereign-citizen group.”
“Seriously?” Harris went silent. “That’s a whole other ball game. Our office could be a target for all I know.”
Addy didn’t think she could respond to that without getting emotional. Since Harris always reminded Addy to remain impartial in her job, Addy moved on. “Mack is informing Eisenhower now. I assumed you’d want to coordinate with him on how we should proceed.”
“Will do as soon as we get off the phone.”
“Let me know what you decide.” Addy was ready to end the call, breathing easy because Harris didn’t ask about Camila.
“You can be sure we’ll talk about the informant once Zamora’s in custody.” Harris disconnected.
Mack was still talking as panic started to form in Addy’s gut. Her friends and co-workers could be targets of this very deadly gun. She could be a target. Her heart started pounding, her breath shallow.
No. Stop. Keepbusy.
She tapped the map program again and continued to look at the various views of their target house as Mack relayed the pertinent details for the search warrant to Eisenhower.
When he finished his call, he looked at her. “You okay?”
“Not really.”
“Worried about the new threat?”
“Terrified actually.”
“Yeah, this really brings home the danger of a minigun.”
“How are we going to stop him? Just how? We only have a couple of days to find him and the guns. What if we fail?”
“The RED team doesn’t fail.” Mack took her hand and held it tight. The warmth seeped into her, and only a tiny bit of her anxiety vanished. For despite his comment, the teamhadfailed in the Montgomery Three Investigation, so they weren’t as infallible as Mack liked to think.
“We just have to keep our focus,” he added.
She swallowed hard and nodded, taking another beat to remember she was an agent. A professional. She’d faced dangerous situations before and could keep calm. She had to remain in control. Lives depended on her.
She squeezed Mack’s hand and freed hers. “What did Eisenhower say?”
“He’s hoping Zamora will roll on Razo, and we’ll have the information we need to locate the guns, ending the federal threat. I’ll call him back after it all goes down.”
“Sounds like a good plan.” She showed Mack the map on her phone. “Where Zamora is holed up. It’s an area known for drugs, and deals frequently go down in a nearby park.”
She switched to street view to show him a small square box of a house surrounded by tall weeds, on a large lot at the edge of the city.
“We need to get together with Sean and Kiley to make a plan. But first I’ll have Cam get better images of the property and the area.” He made the call to Cam. “I need you to dropwhatever you’re doing and get me surveillance images for the house where we’ll be making an arrest.”
He explained about Zamora and about the latest news on the sovereign citizens. “Then make a list of federal targets in Oregon. It’s not like Razo or the sovereign citizens can go into a federal building carrying a minigun. They’d need to plan to get something like that inside the building. Find the target with the lowest security threshold where they could inflict the most damage. And I want a list of sovereign-citizen members in Oregon who’ve been active and might have the kind of cash to buy these guns. If you don’t find anyone here, then branch out to surrounding states.”
Cam must have agreed, as Mack ended the call.
