“I know he was in talks with other alphas before I left, trying to get them onside to challenge my position. But he never had enough support to actually do it. But Baker’s been alpha for five fucking days and Simon’s already going behind his back. Because you know Baker never would’ve sanctioned an interrogation like that for Logan’s parents.”
“No, he wouldn’t. And even if he’d been forced to, he would’ve found a way to let us know.”
“Exactly.”
Isaac pulled his bottom lip between his teeth for a moment before saying, “You think he’s got more council members on his side?”
“I do. He’d never make a move like that otherwise.”
“Because he’s a fucking coward.”
“But a very clever and persuasive one.” Unfortunately for them. Simon had charm when he wanted it. Some people either couldn’t see through it for what it was or didn’t want to. And it was those latter ones that Michael worried about. There were plenty of London alphas who acted like they weren’t against humans, when secretly they wanted nothing more than to keep them as oppressed as they’d once been.
It wouldn’t take much for them to agree with Simon’s fancy words and persuasive arguments.
“So you think Paul was right, that we need to act sooner rather than later?”
“I do. The longer we wait, the more time Simon has to collect alphas and the harder our fight becomes.”
“Goddess help us,” Isaac muttered, too low for anyone but Michael to hear.
“Smith suggested attacking on the full moon, while most of the HRU are away from the armoury, but now I’m wondering if even that’s too long to wait.”
Isaac’s head whipped up and he stopped walking. “The full moon is three weeks away.”
“I know.”
“We’ll only get one chance at this.”
“I know that too.”
Isaac leant against the wall, one hand gripping hair that Michael wanted to sink his fingers into to pull him close. “We have so much to do before we’re ready, and we still don’t know exactly who we can rely on to be on our side.”
None of what he was saying was news to Michael, so he shrugged. “What choice do we have? If we leave it too late, we’re fucked anyway.”
Isaac exhaled heavily, then met Michael’s gaze with a twinkle in his eyes and a wry smile. “You’ve been back in my life for less than a week and already turned everything upside down.”
Michael smiled back at him, the weight on his shoulders lifting ever so slightly. “I’d hate to be boring.”
Isaac laughed this time and pushed off the wall, backing Michael against the opposite one. “Never,” he whispered, then leant in and kissed him.
Michael closed his eyes, losing himself for one sweet, heart-stopping moment where nothing else mattered but the man in front of him.
It was over way too quick for his liking, but yet still managed to set his blood on fire.
“Come on,” Isaac murmured, breath warm as he moved in for one last peck. “They’ll be wondering where we are.”
“Oh, I think they’ll have a pretty good idea.”
Isaac stepped back, reluctantly, it felt like, and Michael fought the urge to reel him back in. They had to get used to this, though because Michael had a feeling stolen kisses were all they’d get for a while yet.
