“No need to worry, he got it, and apparently Sutton heard more than she bargained for. Bennett went on and on about his skills and then heshowedLexi. They are all better now.”
“Well, I’m still in the doghouse.”
“Do you not have any skills, Finn?”
“I have skills,” I assure her and she laughs.
“Well then you need to show up andshowher.” This woman, she is crazy.
“Okay enough of this, back to the car. How do you have it?”
“Let me share my glory.” She rolls right in to the story and I stand there with a smile on my face.
“I feel like destroying it a little more. Putting a can of tuna somewhere up in the dash so every time he turns on the air or the heat it blows through the vents. And that shit is gonna smell even when he doesn’t. But Dad says I can’t touch it. He doesn’t play well, it’s a battle he and I have been having all morning.”
“You are crazy,” I tell her.
“You have no idea Finn, no idea. But if you want to head this way you’ll see just how crazy I can be. Dad is leaving in fifteen and I have so many fun ideas.”
I hang up feeling so much better than when I called. But instead of going to Montgomery, I leave Maggie in charge and I head to Sophie’s instead.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Finn
The soundof the shower door sliding open triggers her to spin around fast, almost losing her footing.
“What are you doing?”
“Trying to make you forget all about our fight.” I move in closer to her, resting my hand on her hip.
“It wasn’t a fight. It’s not a fight,” she says, looking away from me. “It’s a weird thing that I’m sure you will never understand.”
“I understand,” I assure her after just being reminded of her ex. “And I’m sorry that your salon got ruined over something I did when I was young.”
“That’s just it, you didn’t do anything wrong. This is crazy, I feel crazy.”
Cupping her jaw, I lean in and kiss her softly.
“What you should be telling yourself is none of this actually matters. I don’t think the subject will ever come up. But if it does, then you need to remind yourself that a three minute experience from a fumbling teenage boy is a much different experience than what you and I have shared. I promise you, what we have, there is no comparison.”
“I know,” she confesses and she lifts her chin, looking me directly in the eyes. “I’ve never had this,” she whispers. “This pull, this connection.” Sophie takes a deep breath. “I’ve also never had a relationship where I wasn’t unknowingly sharing the guy with someone else.”
My heart breaks for her as she battles with her thoughts.
“I’ve had three boyfriends in my life, all three of which weren’t exclusive even though they played as if they were. The first guy dumped me because I wouldn’t have sex with him. It took me awhile to give another guy a chance and I thought that two year relationship was everything it was supposed to be. Turns out I was number three in that scenario. Then you know about Ryan.”
“There is no sharing here,” I tell her, hoping that she already knew that.
“Yeah, I know,” she says. “Which is why I’d love to share that. I want to talk about how you make me feel and how I can finally stop worrying.”
“How do I make you feel?” I trace over her jaw with my thumb.
“Like the world stops,” she says and I notice how glossy her eyes appear. “Like I can finally breathe and I don’t have to go to bed wondering if tomorrow will be the day when it all comes to an end.”
Resting my forehead to hers, the warm water from the shower pelts against our skin as we stand there giving ourselves a moment to regroup.
“You have one huge thing that no one before you has ever had.”
