I realized that I was sitting straight up and that the office was incredibly quiet and still. I watched as River’s fingers danced across his chest, toying with the buttons on his shirt.
Damn, he was something else. The way he tilted his eyes up to meet mine, I wanted to grab his face and pull him across the loveseat.
I wanted to smell him, rub him, taste him.
River took another sip from his bourbon. “There are other ways to release some steam, though.”
I arched an eyebrow. Years of training kicked in, and I maintained my composure, even though my dick twitched in my pants. “Is that right?”
“Do you want a shoulder rub?”
We were playing a very, very dangerous game. We both knew it. There wasn’t any doubt in my mind now that River was interested in me. Maybe not as intensely as I was interested in him, but something was there.
Something that my heart told me was good, even as my brain screamed that it was wrong.
I laid a hand on my shoulder. “Sure, thanks.”
River adjusted himself on the loveseat, and I turned, offering him my back. His logic from the other day echoed in my head, even louder than the voices telling me no. I would be the perfect person for a quick hookup, and if we kept things quiet after that, Kai never had to know.
Both of River’s hands landed on my shoulders at once. His thumbs worked in expertly behind my shoulder blades as he squeezed down to my deltoids.
“Relax,” he laughed as he rubbed with just enough pressure. “You really do have a knot.”
I let out a slow breath. “You give a good shoulder rub.”
“I’ve been told.”
I tried to relax into the sensation. Heat throbbed wherever he touched me, building my desire. My dick was rock hard and tenting my trousers, but there was no point in trying to hide it.
We both knew what we were doing.
River hitched closer, and I leaned back into him. We didn’t say anything for a few minutes. He worked his hands around my shoulders as his breath played against the back of my neck and a cyclone of emotions stormed inside of me.
Meredith would come by soon. I needed to pull myself together and get ready for my meeting.
But then my phone buzzed on the table. River leaned back and handed it to me.
“Meredith isn’t coming,” I said, my voice strung between anxiety and desire.
“She canceled?”
I swallowed and turned to face River. His cheeks were flushed, and I could feel the heat radiating from his body like desire. “A party,” I said. “She does this all the time.”
We stared at each other, and I saw the truth written on his face, just like I knew it was written on mine.
Nothing could stop us from the mistake we were about to make.
Chapter Twelve
River
I wasthe one who tempted Leo. Whatever we had just walked into, it was my fault.
But when I saw the expression etched across his face, it tore me open, and I was too weak and wobbly to turn back.
Leo wanted me. The truth was there, in the swirl of black and silver that burned in his eyes. His lips were slightly parted, and his pink tongue dragged across the back of his teeth as I watched him, studying me like I was his.
The truth was, Leo was powerful in his office. When I watched the other employees look up to him, I learned that there was more strength behind his cocky confidence than I understood at first.
