Demi nodded. “And once you find out about the breeder camp, we’d love to help with the attack.”
“We would?” Sawyer asked his wife. “Another one?”
“Wewould,” she pressed.
“Yes. We would,” Sawyer confirmed.
Luka clapped Sawyer on the back and pulled him into a bro hug. “Instead, how about you keep your eye on the fey for me here. I might need you to help secure the home front while we deal with the breeder issue.”
Sawyer nodded. “NowthatI can do.”
I gave Demi a quick hug and thanked them both again before Luka and I stepped outside, where his new assistant was waiting in a black SUV.
“What if the vampire council says no?” I asked.
He shrugged. “I’m not asking permission. I’m just telling them.”
I loved this man.
Tomorrow we would be entering a whole new world, literally, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.
Chapter Six
We hadno way of knowing if Ithaki or humans were even allowed in this mysterious Los Angeles magical enclave, so we felt it best for Luka and I to travel there alone. Ruby and Liv begged to tag along, but we couldn’t risk it. This was a scouting mission only. We would report back and make a gameplan from there.
I drummed my fingernails on the pull-down tray of the Drake family private jet as we flew to Los Angeles. “Any word on Morgana’s whereabouts?”
Luka’s jaw ticked. “No. She’s completely gone off grid. Not hanging at any of her usual haunts, her cell phone was deactivated, and her summer house in Coeur d’Alene is empty.”
She must have gotten quick word that I’d been changed and Luka was seeking revenge.
“Well, the truth witch let slip that based on what she saw, it was good enough for a death sentence,” I told him.
Luka’s head swiveled to mine. “One I will inflict very slowly upon her.”
A frown pulled at my lips. “What about the Sire-Fledgling Pact? It seemed like a big deal at the fight.”
“Screw the pact! She nearly killed my wife!” Luka screamed so loudly the vampire air hostess shot him a quizzical look.
“Luka.” I lowered my voice. “Iwant to kill her.”
“No,” he growled, the veins in his neck twitching. “I will do it.”
“And what happens to your crown if you break that pact?” I asked.
Reaching out, he grasped my left hand, fingering the engagement ring on my finger. “Aspen … I care more for revenge and your honor than I do about my position as king. I will take care of Morgana or I will never be able to proudly call myself your husband.”
His tone was final. The king had spoken. And although his words were harsh, they were also sweet. I’d have to let it go, for now.
When we landed at LAX, there was a hired car ready to take us to Spicy Pho City in Burbank. This plan was kind of crazy but I didn’t see any other way to learn about what was going on inside these other enclaves than to visit them ourselves. My stomach was tied into knots as I tried to act human around the other people at the airport. Even though it was a private plane and we were able to disembark at a smaller terminal, there were humans and I could hear their heartbeats, smell their coppery chocolate blood pulsing in their veins, and sense when they were staring at Luka and I.
“People are staring,” I hissed, trying to remember to walk slowly and fake breathe.
Luka chuckled. “Because we’re both really good looking.”
I glared at my man. “Well, at least one of us is humble.”
He reached over and slung his arm around my waist, giving me a wink that made my immortal knees go weak.
