I liked her. I liked Sawyer. Holy crap, I was a vampire who was close friends with two werewolves. Is this real life?
Demi and I ransacked the jewelry, trying it all on and parading around in it while the boys painstakingly looked for that map.
“Oh, this would be perfect for Sage’s wedding!” Demi’s hand stilled on an emerald green necklace and earring set.
“Totally,” I agreed.
“Babe?” Demi asked.
Sawyer parroted the same thing he’d been telling her over the past hour: “Take whatever you want, my love, you don’t need to keep asking.”
Demi grinned.
“Are you this rich?” I asked Luka jokingly.
He and Sawyer shared a look, causing both to grin.
“He’s richer,” Sawyer admitted, and my stomach dropped out.
Wait, what? I was kidding.
“Living forever means we have a lot of time to … secure our wealth,” Luka told us. “All vampires pay a crown tax, and the reigning Drake gets the honey pot, so to speak.”
“Okaaay, girl, damn,” Demi whispered and I just snort-laughed.
Luka’s money was not my money and never would be. I liked to make my own way.
“Got it!” Sawyer shouted.
We scrambled from our seat at the jewelry stash and peered over Sawyer’s shoulder.
Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Austin, and Minneapolis! The six cities that Ruby had told me she had confirmed deposits from all had stars over them. The one marked Los Angeles was a green star.
At the bottom of the map, next to the key, the green star said:Spicy Pho City.
We all frowned.
Red star over Austin Texas said:Vegan Barbeque.
“They’re restaurants,” Demi mused.
“Entrances to the enclaves?” I wondered aloud.
“That’s what my dad made it seem like. It’s not like here where you can just drive in. He said the entrances were small, exclusive, and closely monitored. Something like that.”
I pulled out my burner flip phone and took a picture of the map. “Thank you, this is super helpful.”
Demi looked at my flip phone in disgust. “Luka, you need to get your woman a better phone.”
Luka grinned. “It’s on the to do list.”
I turned to my fiancé. “It looks like I’m hungry for pho. How about you?”
Luka took in a deep, fake, unnecessary breath. “Let me at least tell the council, so if we wind up missing they know where to look for my dead body. We can leave first thing tomorrow.”
“Not funny!” I smacked his firm pecs. “It’s going to be great. You and the vampire king of Los Angeles will probably be besties.”
Sawyer frowned. “If you don’t call me in twenty-four hours, I’m sending in the troops.”
