My gaze then fell on the truth witch. Her hood was pulled up and she looked road weary, with pale dry skin and messy hair. Probably had to travel here quickly for this issue.

I smiled. “Sorry for bringing you out here for this misunderstanding.”

She raised one eyebrow. “I saw some very interesting video footage of you standing on someone’s shoulders and setting a building full of humans on fire.”

The elders gasped and I winced.

“I’ll determine the misunderstanding,” she added.

Crap. I cleared my throat and extended my hand. “But please go back further and look at the cemetery. Look at all of it,” I pleaded.

She looked tired. Dark circles hung under her eyes, but she nodded in compliance. “Very well.”

She grabbed my hand and the wall lit up with images. She’d gone way back as asked, unfortunately right to the spot where Morgana kidnapped me. I squeezed my eyes shut, not wanting to relive this, and she muttered an apology. “I’d like to see this too, for Morgana’s sentencing when we catch her, if you don’t mind. Otherwise, I’ll need to come back and get your testimony…”

“It’s fine,” I told her, swallowing hard with my eyes still pinched shut.

Hearing Morgana speak out into the room made chills race up my arms, but I knew it was just from the memory and she wasn’t here and couldn’t hurt me. The thump of bullets unloading into my body made my stomach tighten and throb with phantom pain. The elders gasped at what they saw, but I kept my eyes closed.

“Evil woman,” the truth witch muttered.

Luka’s pleas to save me, along with Liv’s, had tears running down my face. The truth witch squeezed my hand lightly. “I’ve seen enough of that for Morgana to be sentenced to death. Moving on,” she told the room.

Sentence Morgana to death? That was a relief. I hoped I would be the one who could deliver such a sentence.

Next, I heard Liv and I at the cemetery and my eyes popped open. We were kneeling in front of Sterling’s grave, and when I spun around I came face to face with Maz. The memory sped up until Maz dropped her illusion, then the truth witch’s eyebrows raised.

“Interesting,” she commented, as Maz showed her full-on Munai self.

That battle played out where I was shot yet again.

My poor body. Shot, my uterus carved out by Luka’s former fiancée Cassara, shot again by Morgana. It was like I was destined to die.

When the witch got to the part where I was discussing Ruby with Luka, I froze.

“I forbid you to go,” Luka’s unconvincing voice rang throughout the room.

“There!” an elder vampire commented. “Our king is innocent in these matters.”

The truth witch raised one eyebrow and went through the rest of the memories, including me burning down the building and saving Ruby. She saw Maz act all human in front of the other hunters, but also the email with the proof none of them were human.

By the time she was all caught up, she dropped my hand and stroked her chin.

“You’re a supernatural now. You cannot put humans in danger,” she scolded.

I swallowed hard. “Yes, ma’am.”

“But…” She raised a finger. “I didn’t see you come into contact with any humans. As far as I’m concerned, Maz is a Munai fey, and all of her hunters are Ithaki. You were just getting your kidnapped friend back after diplomacy failed. The Magical Creature Council will not be pressing charges.”

I sagged in relief. “Thank you.”

She nodded once, looking weary and ready for rest.

“Umm, can I ask you something?” I lowered my voice, although I was pretty sure the old geezers with super hearing could still hear me.

She tilted her head to one side, indicating I hurry.

“Are there any laws against going to other magical enclaves in other states?”
