I gave her a nervous laugh and looked at the others. I didn’t want them to feel guilty if I got in trouble for this. “Nothing. All good,” I lied.
We drove the rest of the way in silence. All I could think about was the way my fellow hunters had looked at me with disgust.
Chapter Five
“Should I be nervous?”I asked Luka as we walked down the hall to meet the truth witch. She’d been kind-ish before, but I had no idea if what I’d done broke any supernatural laws.
Luka made a face that indicated he wasn’t sure. “Technically you were a vampire when you burned down the building in Spokane, so you’re now under supernatural law.”
“Maz is a Munai!” I snapped.
Luka held out his hands. “We have no proof of that.”
I chewed my lip and then a thought came to me. “Yes we do.” I tapped my head. “The truth witch will see the attack at the cemetery if I tell her to look there, right?”
Luka bobbed his head up and down. “But she’ll also see you lighting fire to a building full of humans.”
I scoffed. “They’re Ithaki first of all, and I was saving Ruby’s life!”
Luka nodded. “Let’s see what she says.” He stopped in front of the double doors and faced me. “I’m not permitted to go in this time.”
I bobbed my head up and down and he leaned forward, pressing a kiss on my lips.
‘If she sentences you to Magic City Prison, we’ll run away together,’he said into my mind and I froze.
Magic City Prison?
I … I was a vampire, so I guess that’s where I would go. The shock of that was too crazy for me to process.
Oh man, I was not feeling this right now. I didn’t regret what I’d done. Ruby was safe and with her people, and the resistance against the breeder farms would live on, but, man … I was not cut out for prison.
I growled. “Let’s just get this over with!” I snapped and spun around.
His arm snaked out and caught mine. “My love, when was the last time you fed?”
“This morning. Why?” My gaze flicked to his, daring him to say anything rude.
“Your eyes look a tad … cagey. Here, have this before you go in.” Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a bottle of blood.
Thirst flared to life. I snatched the bottle from him, bringing it to my lips. A moan ripped from my throat as the liquid chocolate poured down my throat. It. Was. So. Good. I mean, I would miss bacon, but this was second best.
Luka cleared his throat, adjusting the front of his pants. “When is our wedding night again. Can we set a date?”
He’d agreed to give me my dream wedding but that would take a bit of time to plan. Pulling the bottle from my lips, I grinned, licking my teeth. “A month? Gives us time to plan something nice.”
He smiled and my heart melted. I loved that smile. “A month is perfect. My gift will be ready by then.”
Gift. “Right. Mine too,” I lied, and he only chuckled.
“Go on. Don’t keep her waiting.” He indicated the door and I nodded.
I stepped into the familiar space. The vampire council sat at the back of the room and dipped their heads in greeting as I approached.
Okay … didn’t expect them to be here.
“We will bear witness. It’s nice to see you in your eternal form, Aspen,” the tallest one said.
Eternal form.Holy crap, what a reality check. I was going to live forever.
