Holy crap, she was right. We could use our time here to find our moms!

“So we trust them?” I gulped.

Liv shrugged. “I think we have to if we want answers.”

Twenty minutes later,I’d told Sage and Demi everything. They just sat there quietly absorbing it all, reading Sterling’s note and the attached papers, all of it. I held nothing back. When I’d told them about finding Sterling’s head in a box, Demi reached out and clasped my hand in support.

“I knew your ears were a little too pointy!” Sage commented then. I laughed, nervously reaching up to touch them. Were they?

“Can you help us? Find our moms?” I asked.

Demi and Sage shared a look, one I couldn’t interpret.

“The war is over,” Demi said. “The werewolves and vampires are on thin ice until a new king is crowned. But there is a one constant enemy of my people and that’s the Ithaki.”

Ithaki. That was the word I’d forgotten. It was the word for…

“That’s what you are,” Sage said in a small voice. “The fey have magic that can cause them to be able to breed with any race, and the product of a fey mixed with anything is an Ithaki.”

Demi nodded. “But mixing with humans issoforbidden it isn’t even funny.”

“But they did!” Liv growled angrily.

“So, we’re the bad guys?” I frowned. I hadn’t really expected to hear that. I was part of a race that was at odds with the werewolves? That felt weird now that I sat across from two of them.

“No, you’re not bad,” Demi added. “But most of the Ithaki are, and we are still at war with them, so it will be harder to help you but not impossible.”

My heart lightened at that. “What are you saying?”

Demi and Sage shared a look and both nodded.

“I’m saying I like a challenge,” said Demi, “and I have a friend who might know about the breeding program your moms are in.”

“Who? Where are they? Can we go see them while we are here?” I was full of questions.

Demi nodded. “Her name is Marmal. She’s a member of my pack. A troll.”

Troll! I could feel my eyes widened. There was a troll in a wolfpack?

“When can we go?” I was excited to hear any news of my mom.

Demi shrugged. “Have you fed Luka today?”

I shook my head. “Not yet.”

“Call him over, feed him, and we will go. You guys can come to Werewolf City and meet Marmal. I’ll have her ready to talk.” Demi said it so casually, like she wasn’t arranging the most important meeting I’d ever have in my life.

If my mom was alive … what would I do? What would she say? The endless possibilities filled up my brain as Liv typed something on the fancy TV app Gunner had shown us.

“Luka has been summoned for lunch,” Liv said, and I glared at her, although it wasn’t untrue.

A mere few moments later there was a knock at the door. Demi answered it and Luka gave her a hug. “Hey, I got a text saying you guys were leaving the city and I needed to feed now or starve?” Luka sounded annoyed.

“Liv!” I yelled at my bestie, who grinned and shared a high five with Sage.

Demi snort-laughed. “Yeah, I’m taking the girls to Werewolf City for a tour. We will be back by nightfall.”
