“Jazzy, what are you saying?” I demanded.
“I’m saying if something else happens to her there’s not a whole lot they can do, especially at her age. The doctor said she has blocked arteries but Big doesn’t want surgery, a whole lot of doctors, needles, and medicines with side effects worse than the disease.”
I covered my eyes and shook my head. “Wait. When did all this happen?”
“While you were outside the room having confrontations with Sean’s baby momma and having lunch with your boo.”
Her words bit into me, tearing into my heart. “I had no idea,” I sputtered. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“How could I when you came back with news that you were going to LA?”
I stood still. In that moment, I felt like I was in one of those old cartoons with a devil on one shoulder feeding me bad advice and an angel on the other giving the exact opposite advice. I just wasn’t sure which shoulder the devil was perched on.
“Niya, you’re selling out,” Jazzy stated as fact.
She was right. Maybe. I gulped, hoping the life I was buying was worth what my twin sister said I was giving away.
