“So what are you gonna do with it?” Colcord asked.

“The warrant called for anything that might be related to the homicide, which sure seems to be the case here. I’m keeping it and logging it in.”

“To give back to the priest?”

“No. As official evidence.”

Colcord frowned. “I’m not sure your boss is going to approve of holding it as evidence.”

He handed it back, and she put it in her pocket. “It’s my case, not hers. And every time you’ve told me to ignore Castillo,” she said, “it’s bitten us in the ass. I’ll be shocked if there isn’t some connection to be made here.”

“Cash, just stop a moment and think: What evidentiary value could you possibly extract from a two-­thousand-­year-­old holy relic—­which, by the way, the pope himself wants back?”

“And he’llgetit back, but not before I’ve analyzed it. With all the media crap I’m getting about Maine, the last thing I need is you against me too. It’s my call, Colcord—­end of discussion.”
