Then again, she hadn’t been showing last time.

Maybe that was why she was here. She was way too pregnant for battle.

“I’ll be right back,” he whispered to Lil before he started toward his enemy.

Myone eyed him cautiously.

He expected her to flee at his approach.

Instead, she stood her ground and eyed him warily. “What are you doing here, Malphas?”

“Paying respects. You?”

“I think you know.” She started around him, but he stopped her.

Malphas gasped as he touched her and saw a future image of what her son would look like.

What he’d do.

In the future, he was fighting under Jaden’s banner. Given how much his brother hated their father, he found it impossible that Xev’s son would fight for the grandfather who’d done so much harm to them.

“Does Xevikan know about the baby?”

“Shh!” she snapped before looking about as if terrified someone would overhear them. “You know nothing. I carry your brother. Not your brother’s son.”

“What game are you playing?”

“I’m not a demon. I don’t play games with people.”

She might be saying that, but he knew better. Had his father impregnated her, the baby wouldn’t have the stench of the Mavromino on it. It was unmistakable. Xevikan’s mother was the Queen of All Darkness. Azura. He’d served his aunt long enough to know her unique brand of evil, and Myone’s child reeked of it.

“Does Xev know?” he asked again.

The sadness in her eyes actually wrung pain from his heart. She didn’t respond with words. Just a subtle nod.

Caleb winced. “Let me guess. Marrying you off to our father was his idea to protect the baby.”

“To protect me.”

Caleb ground his teeth. Of course. His brother was an even bigger idiot than he’d assumed. “You two are playing with fire.” If they thought for one moment they could fool his father, they were stupid beyond belief.

“You know Jaden is smarter than this.”

“I know. He’s never touched me, and my lord has no intention of touching me. He’s said as much.”

“Does Braith know?”

She frowned at him. “I don’t know. Why would you ask that?”

Talk about playing with fire…

“When she had an affair with her Sephiroth, they demanded Kissare’s life as punishment. If Jaden doesn’t take your life in the same manner, Braith will be even more hate-filled than she already is.”

The war they were fighting would worsen and become bloodier than anyone could imagine.

“I didn’t know about that.”

But his father did. How could anyone forget Braith’s wrath? It was a large part of what had led to this war. She wanted the lives of everyone who’d forced the death of her love.
