Mostly, that short list was his father, Cam and Rezar. And his aunt, Lilith, just because.
So long as they breathed, Braith intended to back Azura and Noir in their fight. To watch the world burn. And Caleb should know. Braith was his primary commander.
Her and her son, Monakribos Malachai. The head demon boss. Everything went from Braith to her son to Caleb.
No wonder he was so much happier with the humans than with his evil overlords.
Myone looked past his shoulder to where Lilliana waited for him. “There’s something different about you, Malphas.” She swept her gaze over his humble human clothes. “And I don’t just mean the downgrade on your wardrobe. You seem almost… nice.”
He hated that it showed, and he wanted to lie to her. But he couldn’t. “Can I ask a favor?”
She arched a brow. “Last time we were together, you tried to kill me.”
“And you almost succeeded in killing me.” One corner of his mouth lifted in an amused grin. “Thank you for that.”
“Sarcasm?”
“Truth. I owe you, Myone. Anything you ever need.”
Her frown turned to confusion. “Then why are you asking me for a favor?”
“Because I don’t want anyone to know where I am. You keep my secret and I’ll keep yours.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Caleb?”
He winced as Lilliana finally approached them.
Suspicion clouded her pale eyes and he hated that he’d put it there. He’d never hurt her. Not intentionally.
“Is something wrong?”
He tried to think of something to say. Something to keep her from learning about Myone. But he didn’t want to lie to her. “I was talking to my sister. Myone meet Lilliana.”
Myone gasped. “I was right. There is something different about you, Malphas.”
“Caleb,” he corrected before her father or the priest overheard them.
“Are you here for our wedding?” Lil asked.
“Wedding?” Myone’s gaze went from Caleb to Lilliana and back again. “So you do have a heart.”
“Myone… please.”
“Have no fear, Malphas. I’d never harm an innocent. I’m not the demon here.”
Her barb irritated him, but he wasn’t about to break their truce. “Yet you wouldn’t hesitate to harm me. I still have the scar in my side to prove it.”
Lil sucked her breath in sharply. “She’s the one who wounded you?”
“She is. But I forgive her. It was the kindest thing anyone ever did for me before I met you.”
Lilliana was aghast at his nonchalance. “Your sister tried to kill you?” Furious at the very thought, she turned on the tall, graceful woman. “Why would you do such a thing? How could you?”
“He’s a…” Myone stopped as if she thought better of what she was about to say. Then, she passed a scowl toward Caleb. “You do know the difference between you and your brother?”
“My demon blood.” It was all any of their kind ever saw when they looked at him. “But I’ll take demonic blood over Azura’s any day. And need I remind you that Xev isn’t a demigod. He’s a full god of chaos, plagues, violent death… should I continue?”
