Greta scrunched up her nose. “Why can’t we just egg her house already?”
“Because we’re not going to do anything stupid.” Elinor turned her stern gaze from Greta to Edward, who had come up with a few of his own ideas, none of which she’d allow. Their happiness was the best revenge, and the last thing they needed was to be arrested for something the police might actually care about.
Edward climbed down the ladder and pulled out his phone. “Actually, I did do something.”

In Edward’s defense, Lucy did say he always had a choice. He was just making sure Lucy carefully considered her next one.
Elinor took the phone from his hands and leaned into him as she read. The feel of her in his arms was a comfort he’d never take for granted as long as he lived.
Dear Readers ofNice Guys Finish Happy,
My engagement to Lucy Steele has been a publicity stunt for the past eight months. It’s not something I ever planned to make public, but both of us need to move on with our lives, and Lucy is unfairly targeting me and everyone I care about.
We were a real couple when she wrote her book. I did ask her to marry me. But the truth is, sometimes two nice people don’t end up being right for each other, and sometimes that happens at an inconvenient time. That’s on me. However, revenge, blackmail, and lies are not a great way to fix a bad situation, nor is it very nice. Ask Lucy the truth. It’s time.
Sincerely,
Edward Ferrars

Elinor gripped his arm. “So, you didn’t really post this? Please tell me you didn’t post this.”
“Post what?” Greta jumped up on her toes in an attempt to see his phone, but Edward kept it out of her reach. The less people who knew what he was considering, the better. At least for now.
Elinor gave her sister a side hug. “Go eat a sweet roll, and then clean out Babbity’s cage, okay?”
Greta sighed. “Okay, fine.” She stalked up to the house. “But I’m eating two sweet rolls.”
“Whatever.” As soon as the front door closed, Elinor stared him down. “Speak.”
“I made it look like I had posted it, just so she’d really stop and think about what that would mean for her career, and then we had a long talk. Lucy won’t outright admit she was responsible for the robo-call thing, but she said, hypothetically, if she had done it, it wasn’t something that could be undone. And as a token of her sympathy for your situation, she bought you this.”
Edward moved to pick up a white plastic bag on the lawn and pulled out a brand new iPhone still in the box.
Elinor’s jaw dropped. “No way.”
“No way, as in you can’t accept?”
“Oh, I accept. But what if she did something to this one?”
Edward laughed. “I had the same thought. I went and exchanged the one she bought with another one, just in case. You know I’d buy you any phone you wanted though, right?”
“I know. But I don’t want you to do that. I’m happy with my bribe phone. What do I do with the burner phone, though?”
“I’ll take it back. Or we’ll keep it in case we become fugitives or get recruited by a secret government agency.”
Elinor took out the burner phone, which already had Edward’s number programmed in it, and called him.
He stared at her as he answered. “Yes.”
“This is Agent E. What’s the password?”
He raised an eyebrow. “This is also Agent E, and the password is… dinner?”
“Tonight?”
