“Yep!”

“Nope.” I shake my head. “I’m thinking, okay? It’s just wild to me that you’re so obsessed with this one guy.”

“Talk about a broken record—”

“It’s true, though. There are billions of guys out there, and here you are, clinging to the same old safety blanket.”

She brings a finger to her chin. “I think they call it monogamy, you know.”

“But you guys aren’t even together anymore,” I fire back, too harshly.

“Wow, yeah.” She frowns. “Thanks for the reminder.”

“Sorry. It’s just so dumb.”

She mutters something and dives back into her books, and I figure I should give her some space for the rest of the day.

Once we’ve chowed down on our microwave carb feast, I settle into the couch, but I still can’t relax. Lois falls back next to me and curls up in the corner.

“You sure you don’t want to head out with the others?” she asks quietly. “It’s not too late. I don’t mind spending the night alone, you know. So if you want to party—”

“You trying to get rid of me?”

“I’m not!”

“I don’t give a shit about partying,” I say, flinging an arm over the back of the couch.

She nods and turns back to the TV, her legs tucked beneath her, making her look so distant.

“You can stretch your legs out, you know.”

She hesitates, and so I reach for her ankles and pull them over my thighs. It takes her a few breaths to relax. There’s nothing inherently sexual about this situation, but the heat of her skin against mine is getting to me. I trail my fingers down her calves, and I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but I can’t stop. I’m doing my best to play it cool—inside I’m on fire. She shivers, and I can feel her gaze on me like a phantom touch. I keep my eyes fixed on the TV, but as the scenes go flashing by, all I see are images of Lois pushed up against that fence, Lois moaning, Lois coming if only I’d been able to finishwhat I started. Then she’d see it isn’t just Kirk who can get her where she needs to be. The guy has zero experience, but somehow she worships him like he’s some kind of sex god. My jaw is clenching. I’m practically panting.

“Lane?” she whispers.

“What?”

“You okay?”

I push her legs off me and jump to my feet. I need water.I’m losing it!I pace around the couch, feeling Lois’s eyes on my back as I put a little distance between us, laying my hands on the armrest, catching my breath.

“Why are you so antsy? Is it something to do with the New Year?”

I look down at her. “Got any resolutions?”

“Resolutions are just things you didn’t manage to do the rest of the year, so—”

“So getting back with Kirk, then?” I can’t help myself.

She frowns. “Lovely. How about you?”

“No idea.”

That’s not exactly true. I do have one idea—and it’s getting bigger and harder with every second.

She tilts her head before shifting in her seat, stretching out on one side, an arm folded under her head, her curves gently rising and falling in front of me, sparking a fresh wave of desire.

“Why are you just standing there?”
