“Well. They want the two of you to travel with the team to Tennessee for tonight’s game. I’m working on my end to get you two a shot up here in Detroit, so I’ll keep you updated. Be ready,” he said before disconnecting the call.
Damn.
He was actually serious about this…
It dawned on me then that it might actually happen…
We might actually get a chance…
I quickly walked down the hall to Duke’s room to give him the news.
49. Griff
A couple hours later, I was hugging Sav’s head into my chest to say goodbye to her at the airport. I was feeling pretty shitty that she had to make the two-hour drive back to Detroit all alone.
Last night, it felt like some kind of invisible barrier between the two of us was finally crossed… but now I had to leave again… and I was afraid our progress would be erased.
“You sure it’s alright?” I asked, looking down at her.
She patted my stomach lightly and gave me a reassuring smile. “Oh course. I’m relieved you guys didn’t ruin your chance with this team.”
“Well, it helps that Griff put two of their guys on the injured reserve list,”Duke laughed and slapped me on the back. He moved closer to us and whispered, “I don’t think any of these guys will mess with us after we took them all on and fuckin won.”
I felt myself grin at that.
Sav just shook her head in disapproval, but I could tell she was fighting the corners of her lips from curving up.
_______
On the flight, Duke fell asleep next to me, and I was glad for it. I wanted to finish my current read without him snooping. I paid the extra amount to have cell phone service just so I could possibly read on my phone… and, I wanted Sav to be able to contact me if she needed.
I turned my phone brightness all the way down just in case and opened up my book app to continue reading Pregnancy and Delivery for Guys. While I wasn’t sure if Sav wanted me to be there for her in the delivery room or not, I secretly hoped she did… and if shedidwant me there, I wanted to be prepared.
My entire focus was directed on the book, and I was actually pretty annoyed when my phone rang.
“Griff here,” I muttered while taking a sip of water.
“How soon can you two get back to Detroit?” Coach Petersen’s voice filled the line.
I almost choked. “What?” I sputtered out.
“You heard me! How soon can you and Callahan be back in Detroit?”
I looked out the airplane window. “Uhh… we’re currently in the air on a plane to Tennessee with the minor team, so…” I let the sentence die.
“Well, we want you in Detroit for Tuesday night’s game againstAnaheim.”
My heart practically stopped. “You mean… you want us to play for the Crewmen?”
“Did you not understand me, Griffiths? Put Callahan on the phone!” he barked.
I blinked a couple times and cleared my throat. “Uh. We wanna play, it’s just… we’d have to get on a plane back to Detroit as soon as we land…”
“Is that a problem for you ladies?”
“Yeah, no,” I felt myself laugh. “We’ll be there. Thank you.”
“Be at the rink Tuesday at 1 p.m.,” he said before terminating the call.
