I shoved Duke next to me. He yawned and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes before looking around, then quickly shoved me back when he realized we hadn’t landed yet.
“What the fuck, man,” he muttered. “I was havin’ a good dream. What’s your problem?”
I pointed to my phone. “Coach Petersen called. He wants us up in Detroit for Tuesday’s game.”
His mouth dropped open. “No fucking way,” he said as he starred at my phone.
“Yeah!” I said excitedly.
He grabbed my phone. “Pregnancy and Delivery for Guys!” he cackled. “This is precious, Griffy!”
“Asshole,” I grunted and tried to fight to grab my phone back from him. I fixed him with a darklook.
After he settled down and wiped the tears from his eyes from laughing, he said, “Damn. we’re gonna be in the Big Show. We gotta tell her.”
“We do,” I grinned.
I think Savannah was who we both thought of telling first.
“Maybe let’s get our flights first though. I don’t wanna get her all excited and then not even be able to make it to the game,” I told him.
“True.” He smiled next to me. “But we’ll make it, man,” he said confidently. “I’m gettin my ass to Michigan even if I have to walk,” he laughed.
I was right to be cautious.
As soon as we landed, the two of us left the team and bolted straight for the Airline’s counter to purchase more tickets… but we didn’t get very far.
“When’s the next flight to Detroit?” I asked the older woman behind the counter. My eyes flickered to Duke who was busy flirting with a girl by the vending machine a few feet away from me. He was probably already trying to get himself a good luck snickers bar.
“Sorry, sir,” the woman shook her head, and my stomach started to drop. “You all were the last flight in. The rest have been canceled. We aren’t flying for 48 hours.”
I was taken aback by that. “What do you mean?” 48 hours would be too late. It was already Sunday afternoon… The game was Tuesday night… and they wouldn’t let us play if we flew in the same day…
“I mean, we’re having a snowstorm, sir,” she told me matter-of-factly.
No… I moved to look through the gate’s large window… There was barely an inch of snow on the ground. That was a dusting. It was nothing.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” I said dryly, looking back at her. “That’s like no snow.”
She shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal that our big break was about to get absolutely shit on. “That’s a lot of snow for us.”
Duke came up behind me and slapped me on the back. “What’s up? When’s our flight?” he asked happily.
“It’s not gonna happen,” I mumbled.
I moved away from the counter and started looking up rental car places on my phone.
“Dude, why?”
I rubbed a hand over my face. “The fucking snow, Duke.”
I put my phone on speakerphone while it rang for the rental car place… But after requesting a car, the person on the other end of the line started laughing at us.
“Tennessee is about to have a huge storm, son,” the rental car guy said.“Our lot is empty. All the cars have already been rented because all the flights have been canceled. You guys were late to the party. Good luck to ya though.”
I dropped my head back and looked up at the ceiling.
Of course this would happen to us.
