My brows knitted together as I looked at the screen. The bitch hung up on me. I saw red.

This was it; I was done with Kaden Romano. Fuck him. I paid for my drink and headed home where I spent thenight rehearsing all of the things I would say to Kade when I saw him.

After only two hours of sleep and many of my own unanswered calls and texts later, I got out of bed ready to give Kaden Romano a piece of my mind.

No one approached or spoke to me when I entered RSS. Even the security team at the front entry kept their “good mornings,” to themselves. When I made it to the floor the conference room was on, I noticed it was empty along with the Hive. That was weird. I was never the first one in. I put my stuff down and marched to Kade’s office. His secretary wasn’t at her desk either. I knocked on the door and slowly opened it to find the office empty. What the actual hell was going on?!

Fuming, I stormed back to the conference room and aggressively put my password in.

I logged into the Hive server to track Kade’s phone, planning to sic Badger on him while I ate marshmallows.

The server was unable to track his phone. Now that was weird. We had some of the best technology on the market. Dread began to pool in my gut.

I dialed Lennie’s number. She picked up on the second ring, sounding winded. “Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me, do you know where Kade is, by chance?”

“Yeah, St. Mary’s Hospital.”

My heart plummeted to my stomach.Oh god.

“Wait, what? What happened?” I cried into the phone.

“I-m jus-t gett-ing to here now.” Lennie’s voice came in and out as she lost reception. I could only hear syllables by the end of the call before it dropped.

Tears welled in my eyes as I rushed out of RSS and jumped into Bug.

I pulled up to St. Mary’s Hospital in record time, circling the parking garage twice before I found a spot.

I rushed into the hospital where my eyes were drawn to a tall man in a suit. Kade. Relief flooded me, seeing that he was okay. If he was okay, then who the hell picked up his phone?

Kade was talking to a burly man with hair styled like a Viking’s. The man handed Kade something before he visibly looked annoyed.

“Bitch wouldn’t let the fucking thing go. I think I need to get a rabies shot.” One of the man’s arms flailed around as he spoke adamantly.

Kade’s face screwed up in confusion. “Why?”

The man lifted his other forearm to show the bleeding mark on it. “Fucking bitch bit me!”

As if sensing me, Kade’s eyes found mine. He looked like he hadn’t slept. His usual pristine attire was wrinkled and there was red splatter on his white dress shirt. His face fell when he saw my clear distress. He walked away from the Viking man and rushed to me.

EVELYN

Kade wrapped his arms around me. My face was buried in his chest as tears started to stream down my cheeks. I felt his lips press against the top of my head. I moved out of his arms and shoved at his chest. “What the fuck happened?” I yelled and shoved him once more. “And why the fuck did some girl pick up your phone?”

I swiped under my eyes as anger coursed through me. I balled my hands into fists at my sides waiting for him to answer.

The Viking looked at me with wide eyes and then turned to Kade. “You good, boss?” the Viking asked.

Kade put his hand up in reassurance before he took a step toward me. “First of all, lower your voice please,” he commanded in a low gravelly tone.

I scoffed and crossed my arms over my chest. “First of all, explainyourself!” I yelled back at him.

A hint of a smile tipped up at the corners of his mouth as he moved closer to me.

“Machine was attacked when he was running an errand,” Kade started. I could read between the lines that hemeant Evan was doing a drop. “My phone fell out of my pocket when I was trying to get him to the car. Bohdi over here,” he motioned to the Viking, “just had to pry my phone from the woman who found it.”
