Adam turned his gaze to me. I didn’t look away from him, all the while willing him to trust me.
Ben dropped off the water and winked at me without stopping to talk.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Adam said. “Knowing who he is might protect me later. It’s more difficult adjusting to having money than I thought.”
I smiled and leaned in for a quick kiss. “I’m here, no matter what.”
He nodded, then returned to his burger. “Let’s eat before it gets cold.”
After a couple of bites, we were both moaning from the perfectly cooked burger with melted cheese and a thick slice of onion.
“You know what this means, right?”
Adam cut his eyes up at me. “What?” he asked around a mouth full of burger.
I grinned. “We’re working out tomorrow to burn this off.”
He groaned like I’d ruined the entire meal, then swallowed. “I can think of other ways to burn this off rather than that torture.”
Laughing and kissing him was becoming second nature. “Be careful what you wish for, Rockstar.”
He smirked. “I’d rather do anything else in the world than work out.”
Hmm. Here was my opening.
“Good to know,” I said cheerily. “Let’s go apartment shopping. It’s time to find you a safer place to live.”
His face fell, making me laugh.
The entire way home, Adam fought me on moving—until we reached his apartment and found the door wide open.
I pulled him close and took out my phone to first call 911, and then Jesse. When he picked up, I wasted no time filling him in.
“Call Detective Ramirez. Someone has broken into Adam’s apartment.”
CHAPTER13
ADAM
I satin Michael’s car as the police collected evidence from my apartment. When we’d first discovered the door was open, Michael looked inside, but stopped me from entering, saying we needed to wait for the police.
As phone calls were made, word spread, and people started showing up.
Cole and Patrick were the first to arrive and stayed by my side while Michael and Jesse talked to the police. Aidan was on the way in case the press showed up.
When Jesse and Michael were finished, Detective Ramirez asked me some questions.
“Have you ever known your mother to act violently?”
I laughed humorlessly and ran both hands through my hair. “She’s a junkie. She’ll do whatever she needs to get what she wants. Being her kid means nothing to her.”
I fisted my hair, trying to quell the tension headache threatening to pound my brain right out of my skull. The scent of Michael’s cologne was the only thing that settled my nerves. What I’d done to deserve this shit was a mystery to me.
“You’re going to need to stay somewhere else, Mr. Spencer. It’s not safe until we find her.”
I looked up with a frown. “This is my home. I have personal protection right here.” I put my hand on Michael’s arm.
“I understand, but we need another twenty-four hours to process any evidence and to check the camera footage from out here. I’m going to walk you and Lt. Coleman through the apartment. Make sure that you don’t touch anything, but whatever you notice that has been disturbed, I need you to point it out to the officer with the camera.”
