“So tell me about your family. Is everyone still in Virginia?”
I shook my head. “No. They live in California. We left Virginia when I was fifteen.”
“That’s quite a move from the other side of the country.”
“It is, but my dad was in the Navy and wanted to spend his last couple of years at Coronado. He and my mom love it there.”
“Is he why you went into the service?”
“Yeah. My dad is my hero. He’s the best man I know. Jesse would be the second.”
Adam’s expression changed, and I suddenly wished I hadn’t said that. “I’m gonna find your father, Rockstar.”
His eyes went wide. “How? I don’t even know his last name.”
I took another sip of my club soda and turned to him, my arm still over the back of the chair. “It’s not as difficult as you might think. I’ve been able to access the database from her college in Seattle. There were less than two hundred students with the name Steven in the alumni records.”
His eyes were wide as he listened to what I’d been doing while he was in the studio. I couldn’t read how he felt about it yet, but I had something else up my sleeve.
“Would you consider doing a DNA test? Their results are very conclusive. Those online sites can connect families with the push of a button. I had a buddy in the service find his biological mother using one. He’d been contacted by the DNA family site, telling him they’d found a match. Turns out, his birth mother lived ten miles from where he grew up. She’d been there all along.”
Adam blinked at me, then took another long pull from his beer. He sat the bottle down and looked over at me.
“If you want me to do it and it’ll make your job easier, then okay, sure.”
We were interrupted when Alejandro delivered our food. He was tall, with dark hair and light blue eyes. No wonder Ben had a thing for him.
“Hey, buddy,” he said, extending a hand. “How are you?”
I smiled and returned the gesture. “I’m good. Alejandro, this is Adam Spencer.”
His eyes lit up in recognition. “Fallen Angel, right? Cole comes in here sometimes. Good to meet you.”
“You too,” he replied.
“I’ll let you eat. Need anything else?”
“Yeah. Can we get two bottles of water?”
Alejandro nodded and glanced at the bar, his eyes lingering on Ben. “No problem. I’ll get Benjamin to bring them over.”
“Thanks,” I replied, then motioned for Adam to watch.
It was fascinating to see their dynamic. Ben looked up and smiled at his boss as he rounded the bar. Alejandro walked up and put his hand on Ben’s lower back before leaning in to whisper something.
Ben nodded and grinned, but the older man didn’t take his hand off him.
“They’re fucking hot together,” Adam mused.
“That they are. But not as hot as us.”
Adam grinned and took a bite of his burger. I took the opportunity to finish our discussion.
“Don’t do the DNA test for me. This is about you. But considering your wealth now, maybe it would be good to know, even if you don’t act on it. It could keep people from crawling out of the woodwork later, claiming to be your father.”
He chewed while studying the burger on his plate.
“Just think about it. I’ll be with you the whole way. I’m not leaving you.”
