“What apartment? This is the first I’m hearing about it.”She steps closer to me again.“How did you find it?Through the palm print Triton had?”
“Something like that,” I grumble.“We knew the genie must have used someone else’s identity to score a job at our beach resort. One of the maids who worked for us looked somewhat like her. When we checked her apartment we found her dead in the bathtub. We’ve been working with Nathan on this.He tracked down the woman’s family and made sure to check buildings to their name.No trace yet.”
“I can’t believe that idiot can stay a few steps ahead of us.It’s as if he’s playing his own game, taunting us, dragging it out, waiting on fuck knows what. Why doesn’t he simply confront us head-on and get it over with?At least then we can...”
“Kill him,” I finish for her.“That’s why he keeps in the shadows, popping up whenever he feels comfortable enough to kill without getting caught. He’s pushing us, waiting for us to fuck up because he damn well knows we’re stronger if he runs into us.”
Fosca’s voice carries a load of anger and frustration when she says, “That thought still isn’t very comforting.Especially when others keep getting killed or hurt.”
I reach out to cup the side of her face and caress her cheek with my thumb.“This is a vendetta going on for decades. One day will come soon enough where retribution will be inevitable.”
She closes her eyes and leans into my touch.
Her voice is a sad whisper when she says, “Or retribution will be too late.”
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
–FOSCA –
My eyes are burning and I definitely need to pee for the millionth time today. Not gonna happen, though.I’m almost done with my autopsy report and instead of doing all of this tomorrow morning, I decided to do the autopsy of both bodies right away.
With the two other medical examiners, along with Dave, missing, my vacation days have been pulled. They are bringing in another medical examiner from out of town, but he won’t be here until tomorrow afternoon.I’m not waiting for more bodies to pile up, and it’s why I’m working late.Typing out the final words, I save the file and shut down my computer.
“All done?”Sevrin asks.
He’s been sitting in a chair in the corner, patiently and without so much as a sound to let me work.
“Yes.Thank you for keeping me company,” I tell him as I stand and turn to grab my coat.
We both know he wasn’t keeping me company for funsies. He told me he wouldn’t leave my side until we talked some more about our trust issues.Right.My need to dive into work might have been due to an alternative motive; dodging talking to Sevrin.
Truth be told? What’s there to talk about? We have a long way to go when it comes to becoming friends, let alone parents, or whatever relationship we might be able to muster.Fated mates only grants you perfect chemistry, the right attraction to have sex and ensure children to carry on the legacy we’re all a part of.
Sevrin nods and pulls his phone from his pocket when he gets a notification.
He thumbs the screen, probably answering the text message he received, and asks, “Hungry?”
