But was anything in her life really ever random? The time to figure that out was probably not the first time she swiped on a dating app. “Onward,” she said.
Chapter Seventeen
“Cheese and crackers are a food group, right?”
—Lauren, Johannesburg, South Africa
April
“Hold up,” Sadie said as April continued to swipe with abandon. She moved to perch on the side of the booth behind April. “Does that guy have a chainsaw?”
April turned the screen. “It says the picture’s from last Halloween.”
The chainsaw was concerning, but not overly so. He had a nice chin. Strong jaw.
Like Jack.
Gah. No. No Jack thoughts allowed.
“Oh, that’s Dale. I know him.” Kitty gave a look, and it became clear she knew him in the carnal sense. “Let’s just go left on that one.” Kitty leaned over and used her own thumb to swipe left.
All righty then, onward.
April’s heart beat a little faster because… Actually, this was fun. Like a safe way to see if she might be interested and he might be interested without all the blah blah of life.
She swiped again, because she could.
And oh.
Yeesh.
They were all intently staring at a man who looked to be snuggling a teddy bear, but one couldn’t be entirely certain that was a bear. What to do? What to do?
The phone in April’s hand chimed. They all shrieked. Especially her.
Her heart was racing for all the wrong reasons.
“You got a message.” Simone practically splayed across the table to get a view.
“Uhh…” April scrolled to find the messages. “Oh, crap.” She scowled. “It’s chainsaw guy.”
“Freaking Dale.” Kitty did not look happy.
“Are you sure?” Simone was full-court splayed on the table, but no one seemed to particularly mind.
“But I swiped left.” April frowned at the image of chainsaw guy. Her pulse stuttered. Was she swiping the wrong way this whole time? Oh goodness. Some of those nos werereallynos.
“Are you sure we’re swiping the right direction?” Simone asked. “Because it seems like we might not be doing this correctly.”
April couldn’t help it. She laughed. Put her palm over her mouth. “I’m not very good at this game.”
Kitty slipped the phone from April’s hand. “Drink your tonic while I figure out what’s going on.”
“Kitty, you can’t just take my dating app.”
“Can and will,” Kitty sang as she flounced away.
April didn’t argue because, well, for the first time in a while she was actually having some fun. And even if the one guy interested in her was chainsaw guy, did it really matter? He was interested. Nice chin.
