“Did you break in?”
Dante looked up from my couch, where he’d been teasing Nebula with a feather, blinking like he was surprised to see me in my own home.
“It’s not breaking in if I know where you keep your spare key,” he said.
Which, okay,technically…
“The babies seemed like they could use some company,” Dante said, turning his attention back to Nebula as she batted at his hand. “I ordered pizza and there’s your choice of cookie dough or mint choc-chip ice cream in the freezer.”
Oh.
Right.
“So you heard…?”
“The whole of town heard,” Dante said, picking Nebula up off the floor and settling her in his lap. Mercury, who’d been napping on top of the cushions, opened his clear blue eyes to glare at the side of Dante’s head, then rose, stretched, yawned, and plopped down to join his foster-sister.
I shifted my weight between my feet, not meeting Dante’s eyes.
“Because of the yelling,” Dante added.
“Yeah, got that.”
Great.
“So. Pizza, movie, eating our weight in ice cream?” Dante prompted.
“That’s a lot of ice cream.”
Dante shrugged just as my phone went off in my pocket. “I figure you finally dropped the two hundred pounds of dead weight you’ve been hauling around since high school today. You can have a pint of ice cream.”
“I weigh slightly more than a pint,” I said.

Despite everything, I smiled.
“That Seattle?” Dante asked.
I looked up at him teasing both kittens in his lap with the feather. “Maybe youarepsychic.”
“I am,” Dante assured me. “But also, there’s a specific smile you only smile when it’s him.”
“No there’s not.”
A crash in the bathroom interrupted whatever Dante was about to say, and I rushed in to find my toothpaste, razor, and Luna in the sink.
She looked up at me with her tiny innocent little silver tabby face, mewling pathetically when the faucet dripped on her head. I laughed, took a quick picture, and then picked her up, sending the shot off to Seattle. Since he’d asked how they were doing.
