Page 111 of Rescuing Ellena

He and Nate shared a look, his gut screaming at him to get her the hell out of there. “We need to move,” he said for everyone’s benefit.

Confirming his thought, Truck’s deep voice piped in next. “We’ve got an incoming bird. Chopper approaching from the south.”

“I need to hear you say it, you murdering son of a bitch.” Ellena continued pushing Price. “You killed Mark, didn’t you?”

Unphased by the sound of the nearing helicopter, he answered her calmly. “Actually, no. I didn’t.” Price used his thumb to point to Hall. “He did.”

“Holy shit.” Matt’s eyes shot to Gabe’s. “She’s getting him to spill his guts! Maybe we should go ahead and let her meet with Radcliff. Guy might confess all his deadly sins.”

Gabe clenched his jaw to keep from ripping into his teammate. No way in hell did he want her anywhere near that son of a bitch.

She shouldn’t be here, now.

Nate grinned. “God, I love that woman of yours.”

“Hall takes care of all of my employer’s problems,” Price admitted openly. “And he and the others are going to do the same to you and your friends if you don’t start walking. Now.”

Gabe watched as his wife looked up toward the now-visible chopper. The humming grew into a more succinct thumping sound, and the closer it got, the more anxious he felt.

“Problems?” Ellena took a step toward Price. “Is that what you called him? A problem? Mark Ellis was a human being. A hero who fought for the same country your boss wants to be in charge of.”

“Ellena, stop!” Both Gabe and Nate warned simultaneously, neither bothering to keep their voices down.

The two guards took a step in their direction, shifting their guns a little higher as a warning.

Price sneered back at her. “My boss is going to be the greatest president this country has ever seen.”

“Who else has died because of your boss?” Ellena prodded. “Tell me their names, and I’ll get on that plane with you right now.”

She’s trying to get him to confess to more.

“Your girl knows we’re listening.” Ghost agreed with his silent thoughts. “She wants us to hear him say it. That way, we can all be witnesses. Pretty damn smart.”

“And fierce.” Matt nodded.

They were both spot on with their assessments, but right now, Gabe didn’t need her to be either. He just needed her back in his arms, safe and away from these bastards.

“Careful, Dr. Dawson.” Price swayed his index finger back and forth. “You seem to forget who’s actually in charge.”

“Not you.” She jutted her chin. “You follow orders, just like these guys do. Only difference is, you wear a fancy suit and designer shoes.”

Goddamn it.“Ellena,” Gabe said her name sharply. “Just walk toward the fucking plane.”

“I don’t understand.” Jenna spoke up from behind him. “What’s she doing?”

Trying to get herself killed, apparently.

Price’s patience was gone. “You have no idea who I am or what I’m capable of.” He got into Ellena’s face. “And unless you want a front row seat to that particular show, I suggest you get your ass on that plane. Now.”

“Fine.” Ellena blew out a breath. “Let’s go.”

Gabe released the air he’d been holding in his lungs, his stomach churning with nauseating bile. Christ, that woman was going to be the death of him, yet.

“Get ready,” he ordered the others quietly. To Ellena, he said, “Okay, baby. Just keep walking toward the plane. Don’t look back at Price or at us. Just keep walking.”

“Chopper’s coming in hot.” Ghost sounded alarmed, but then he said, “Too much of an unknown to engage.”

Damn it, the Delta leader was right. Even though Gabe’s instincts were telling him otherwise, this airstrip was used by too many innocents to assume the people in the helicopter were involved in what was going on.
