Trevor spoke up before Derek could answer. “We’re not going to your house.”

That bit of news surprised her. “Where are we going?”

Rather than answer right away, Trevor took her hand again and led her outside. They’d just started to go down the concrete steps when he casually threw out, “I’m taking you to my place.”

Lexi immediately stopped walking. “Your place?” Pulling on his hand, Trevor made it down two more steps before he turned around.

With her hand still in his, she shook her head. “I can’t stay at your place, Trevor.”

“Why not?”

With him being a few steps below her, they were right at eye level. “Why not?” She parroted his question. “We’ve been ononedate. I can’t spend the night with someone after just one—”

“That’s not what this is about, Lex,” Trevor cut her refusal short.

Lexi bit her bottom lip. Despite the words she’d just given him, a sprig of disappointment sprouted up inside her. “Then, what’s it about?”

Looking her square in the eye, he sounded anything but casual when he told her, “You being safe.”

Lexi’s muscles tensed. His words should have brought comfort, but instead they were a reminder that Rob was still out there, somewhere.

“Do you”—she licked her lips and swallowed—“do you really think he’d show up at my house?”

Reaching for her other hand, Trevor gave them both a little squeeze. “The cops are going to find him, Lex. But, until they do, I won’t get a wink of sleep knowing he’s still out there and you’re in that house all alone. My apartment is in a secure building, and I have a state-of-the-art security system. But if it’ll make you feel more comfortable, we can stay at your place.”

A few seconds of silence passed as Lexi mulled it all over. When she still didn’t say anything, Trevor cupped her face and whispered “Please, angel. For my peace of mind...stay with me tonight.”

Chapter 6

––––––––

Trevor stepped intohis living room. The thick, luscious carpet swallowing his footfalls as he walked. He paused when he saw the woman standing in front of the large, floor-to-ceiling window.

With her arms wrapped around her center, Lexi stared at the bustling city below.
