“Nowhere.” When he didn’t look convinced, she cupped his strong jaw. The bit of scruff there tickled her sensitive skin, but she couldn’t bring herself to pull away. “I’m fine, Trevor. I promise.”
He covered the back of her hand with his. Closing his eyes, he turned his head, pressing his soft lips against her palm. Lexi’s heart tripped over itself at the sweet gesture.
A few seconds later, those dark chocolate eyes found hers once more. “Okay, angel. If you say you’re okay, then I believe you.”
Relieved, she was about to ask again why he was there when Detective West purposely—and very loudly—cleared his throat.
Lexi’s head turned to where he and Derek were both still standing. For a moment, she’d completely forgotten they were even there.
“If you’re done with your...professional medical examination, Matthews, I’d like to get Miss Hamilton’s signature so she can go home.”
Something about the way the man said Trevor’s last name gave her pause. “Wait,” Lexi looked to Trevor, then back to the detective. “You know each other?”
“What?” Derek slapped the detective on the back. “You don’t see the resemblance?”
It took all of three seconds for Lexi to finally realize who Detective West reminded her of. Another second passed and she remembered Derek’s last name.
“West,” she mumbled more to herself than anyone else. She looked at both men again. “You’re brothers?”
“Give the lady a prize.” With his hand on his brother’s shoulder, Derek grinned from ear to ear. “Lex, I’d like you to meet Eric. My baby brother.”
“I’m only younger by two minutes, dumbass.” Detective West—Eric—shrugged Derek’s hand from his shoulder.
Lexi made a tiny snorting sound and smiled. “You’retwins? And your parents named you Derek and Eric. Really?” She giggled as she turned and glanced at Trevor.
“There she is,” he whispered softly, some of the concern finally dissipating from his eyes.
Lexi no longer felt like laughing. She felt like...
“Take me home.”
Detective West spoke up, “I offered to call Miss. Hamilton a ride earlier, but she refused.”
“Lexi,” she clarified.
The man looked at her questioningly.
“You can call me Lexi.”
“Whoa, bro.” Derek nudged his brother. “She must like you. Only herfriendsget to call her that.”
Eric rolled his eyes, but Derek gave her a wink and a smile, helping to calm her nerves even more. Being around these guys, she could almost forget about what had happened with Rob.
Almost.
Her chest tightened as memories from earlier began working their way through. Trevor noticed the change immediately.
“Come on, angel.” He stood, one corner of his mouth tilting up. “Let’s get you out of here.”
Leaving her statement on the table, Lexi stood and scooted the chair back some, its metal legs screeching against the tile floor. Trevor offered his hand, which she took without hesitation.
They were almost to the police station’s entrance when he said, “Why don’t you give Derek your keys. He can follow us in your car.”
“I’m okay to drive myself, Trevor.”
“I know you are,” he agreed, but kept walking.
Assuming he wanted her to ride with him so they could talk about what happened, Lexi released his hand and dug her keys from her purse. Handing them to Derek she asked, “Don’t you need my address? You know, in case we get separated in traffic or something?”
