Chapter 5

––––––––

“Are you sure?” Trevorasked the guy from the garage for the second time.

“Dude. I’ve been doing this shit for ten years. I’m tellin’ ya, there’s nothing wrong with the tire or the valve stem. Somebody had to have let the air out of it on purpose. Probably some dumbass kids playing a prank.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Trevor mumbled. But his gut told him otherwise.

“So, you want it back, or not?”

“Yeah, I’ll take it back. If there’s nothing wrong with it, she can use it as a spare.” He looked at his watch. “I don’t have time to get it tonight. Can I swing by in the morning and pick it up?”

“Sounds good. I’ll mark it sold so no one messes with it.”

“Thanks, man.”

“Sorry I didn’t know about it sooner. When I talked to you last night, you seemed more concerned with making sure your girl got all new tires, and we got our asses handed to us today. To be honest, I almost forgot to even check it.”

“No worries.”

“Well, like I said. It was probably just some stupid prank, but the way the world is these days, you never can be too careful. Your girl seemed nice enough. I’d hate to think of someone messing with her like that.”

If they are, I’ll find them.“I appreciate you letting me know.”

“Any time, man.”

Ending the call, Trevor sat his phone down onto his desk. With his elbows resting on its edge, he brought his fists together and thought about what he’d just learned.

“Whoa, who pissed in your Cheerios?”

His eyes snapped up to find Derek standing in his office doorway. Tipping his chin toward the folder D was holding, Trevor asked, “What’s up?”

“Nuh uh. You first. What’s got you lookin’ like you’re ready for a fight?”

Trevor shook his head. “Remember I told you about Lex’s flat tire?”

“Yeah.”

“The garage just called. She didn’t run over a nail, like I’d thought. Someone intentionally let the air out of it.”

Derek’s brows turned inward. “Who would mess with a sweetheart like Lex?” Instantly, a look of awareness crossed his face. “I bet it was that fucknut, Rob.”

Trevor leaned back in his expensive leather chair and ran a hand over his jaw. Sighing, he agreed. “That was my first thought, too.” He considered this for a moment and then, “I don’t suppose you could find out more about this guy, could you?”

Narrowing his eyes, D said, “I cannot believe you just asked me that.”

Trevor grinned. “Find out what you can and get back to me ASAP.”

Derek’s brows rose. “Is that an official order? Because, I’m not sure Jake would approve the use of company time and resources for a personal favor.”

Trevor rolled his eyes. “Just shut the hell up and do it.” Belatedly, he added a mumbled, “Please.”
