Evan was there too. He waved to me.
I opened the door of the hearse. "Why are you here?"
"We came to talk to the Svenssons. Can you come with us?" Evan explained.
"No, I’m not coming! They hate me," I said, chewing on my lip. I refused to cry.
"Garrett likes you. Plus, I’m still worried they might sue me. The Svenssons can be nasty fuckers. There are so many of them too." He shook his head. "I can’t believe Trisha. And she already sold the advertisers on this. "
"I’m sorry I ruined your business," I said, looking down at my shoes.
"He should have been more involved," Sebastian said. "That wedding is messing with your brain, Evan."
"Actually, it's my fiancée," Evan muttered. "Wait, I shouldn't have said that."
"Not too late to back out!" Sebastian reminded him.
"We’re not discussing this again," Evan growled. He took the steps up to the door two at a time. When he rang the doorbell, I braced myself.
The screaming and running started immediately.
"Good grief," Evan exclaimed.
I could hear Garrett on the other side of the door, yelling at his little brothers to stop behaving like wild animals. I almost cried just hearing his voice.
"I shouldn’t have come," I stammered. Wait, actually I was crying.
Sebastian put his arm around me.
The door opened, and Garrett’s little brothers spilled out.
"Do you have pizza?" they chorused.
"You already ate!" Garrett snapped. Then he looked up, finally noticing me. His face changed from indulgent annoyance to fury.
"Garrett, I’m so sorry—"
"Don’t touch her!" he snarled.
Sebastian stepped back.
"You don’t have to be rude!" I said, hands on my hips.
Wait, did he just say "Don’t touch her?" Fuck that.
Tears forgotten, I yelled, "You can’t be possessive! You fired me! Not that I didn’t deserve it, but for fuck’s sake!"
"That’s a bad word!" Garrett's brothers shrieked. "It's a fine!"
Garrett crossed the wide stone porch and swept me up in his arms, kissing me.
"I'll pay for her," Garrett assured his brothers, ushering me inside.
Evan and Sebastian followed uncertainly.
"Dang, this is a nice house!" Evan commented.
"Can I help you with something, Evan?" Garrett asked coldly.
