Ethan fought back a groan. What the hell were they going to do?
“But,” Zach continued, pulling out his phone, “I have another idea. David made us all get that app, the one that shows you where everyone is.” Zach jabbed the screen and then stared at his phone; head tilted in confusion. “Weird…. It doesn’t make any sense.”
“What doesn’t?”
“Why is she in Green Park?” Zach asked.
“Fuck. We have to go.” Ethan turned and started leading Zach down the stairs at a jog. She was exactly where he had started to worry she would go.
“What’s in Green Park?”
“That’s where Oracle is.”
“What Oracle?” Zach asked from behind him.
Ethan reached the bottom of the stairs and turned to look at Zach’s bemused expression. No one could fake that level of confusion. “You don’t know?”
“No, I don’t know! Could you please just tell me?”
“Kay has been looking into something for Elizabeth. You know those men on Oxford Street? Kay knew they would be there. Elizabeth sent her.”
“She knew?”
“Yes. But there’s more,” Ethan replied. “There was another attack, at a school. We thought Oracle might be involved. We were going to discuss it all with Elizabeth this weekend. Kay was supposed to wait—” He swallowed hard. “We were supposed to check it out together.”
“Fuck. Of course that’s where Kay would go.”
“Exactly. Just, Zach, could you do me a favor? Can you check where James is?”
Zach shook his head. “I don’t need to check.”
Ethan pulled the door open and stepped outside. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, the weird thing wasn’t that she’s in Green Park. It was that she’s there with James.”
Ethan stumbled and almost fell. Hell. That was even worse.
And then Zach grunted. “That’s, ah….” His voice sounded even more strained. “The app refreshed, and now Kay’s pin is gone.”
“What do you mean gone?”
“A minute ago, there were two pins, one for James and one for Kay. Now Kay’s is gone.”
Ethan reached his car and ripped the door open trying to keep a grip on the panic threatening to overwhelm him. Not only had she gone after Oracle, but James was already there.
“Hang on, now James is moving,” Zach said, watching his phone.
Ethan took in a breath and then counted it out slowly, keeping a tight grip on his spiraling Shadows. “Fine. We’ll follow James.”
ChapterTwenty-One
“Hello, Kay,”James said, not even pretending to be surprised to see her. “I thought you were in Wales.”
“No. I’ve been in London. Getting dumped by my boyfriend.” Her Shadows flickered along her arms, and it was all she could do not to let them slip into her fighting blades. “But I guess you know something about that, don’t you?”
His smile grew tight but still a little smug. It was almost a sneer as he replied, “You can thank me later.”
“Thank you,” she repeated harshly. “Thankyou. Are you insane?”
