Azazel furrowed his brows and looked at Blue. “Why do you say that?”
Blue shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. Call it a hunch.”
“Do you always judge people you don’t know?” Azazel asked, knowing he sounded a bit defensive.
“No,” Blue said. “But I know how to read people and I can read him. Mayor Boroson neglects his responsibility and has yet to make the changes he promised. Like I said, he doesn’t seem interested in the job. It almost seems as if he was forced to become mayor.”
“Change takes time, Blue. We’ve only been at the job for one year. What do you expect? He’s not a damn god.”Well, not anymore.
“Well, he shouldn’t have sold himself like one to the people!”
“What’s your damn problem with Loki? You’ve never met him.”
“And why do you always defend him?” Blue yelled.
“What did you just say?”
“I said I want to go home.”
Blue turned to walk away, but Azazel grabbed his arm and stepped in his path.
“That’s not what you said,” Azazel said. “I heard you clearly.”
“You heard wrong.”
Blue glared at him and again Azazel had the feeling that something about the man wasn’t right. The only one who used to argue with him so strongly about his defense of Loki was Uriel, since he was the only one who knew of their close friendship. The look in Blue’s eyes made it seem as if he was looking at Uriel, but Azazel didn’t think that was possible. Unless he was pretending to be Blue Lennox.
If that's the case, why?
Azazel knew there were a few angels who could change their appearance. His bearer Kristoph had been one of them, but Azazel didn’t think that Uriel had that ability—or the information he’d read a few years back never alluded to it. Unless it was a latent ability that he received after they were apart.
Azazel stepped to the side and let him pass, and watched him get into the car. If the man was really Uriel, he had to figure out how to get the truth out of him. Not only that, but he had to find out why he was pretending to be someone else. Azazel wasn’t in a rush to find out the truth. He had waited thirty years to be with the man; he could wait a bit longer.
If he really is Uriel, now I know why I was instantly drawn to him. There’s no way I wouldn’t recognize my mate.Azazel started walking to the car, then stopped as a thought crossed his mind.He said his ex cheated on him. I never cheated on Uriel. I’d sooner cut my dick off than fuck someone else. So what the hell happened thirty years ago?
* * *
Uriel growled, tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep. It was like thirty years ago when he and Azazel would get into an argument and he’d kick the other man out of the bedroom, only to make up with him because he couldn’t sleep. It was too easy how things between him and Azazel fell back into place, as if the past hadn't happened.
Azazel had no idea that he was arguing with Uriel and not Blue Lennox. However things might have seemed the same between them, Uriel had changed over the past few years and would not be the first to bend and contact Azazel.
Uriel knew he could not let his personal feelings impede his job and decided it was best to stay away from Azazel, only interacting with him when it concerned the project. Settled with his decision, Uriel put Azazel out of his mind and tried to get some sleep, but he was out of bed in fifteen minutes and went to his home gym because his mind wouldn’t settle.
Four hours later, Uriel walked out of the gym with sweat dripping off his body as if he’d taken a dip in the pool. He entered the kitchen and walked over to the fridge, stopping when he saw Kristoph sitting at the table having breakfast.
“Good morning, cherub.”
“Morning, Dad.” Kristoph looked up at him and scowled, seeing Uriel soaking in sweat.
Uriel quirked a brow looking at his son, who was dressed in his neat and clean school uniform, and started walking over to Kristoph. “Want a hug?”
Kristoph stood quickly and held up his hand. “Don’t you dare!”
“Oh, come on, don’t be mean to your dear old dad. All I want is a sweet hug from my handsome and adorable son.”
Kristoph instantly disappeared from his sight to the other side of the room the second Uriel got close to him and was about to give him a hug.
“Dad, stop being annoying,” Kristoph pleaded. “Aren’t you supposed to be getting ready for work?”
