Chapter Eleven
Alphonso
“Are you sure you can’t change your mate’s mind?” Synder asked him.
Alphonso didn’t want to put it off telling his parents any longer, but instead of calling his Pop he called his dad, Sin, who he knew would understand and listen to what he had to say.
“No, dad, I won’t even ask him. Sirius just moved back to Vale Valley for a new job that he started today.”
“Moved back?”
“Yeah, apparently he’s Bedwyr’s son.”
“Huh, so he finally found her.”
“Wait, you knew about Bedwyr’s mate going missing?”
“Yeah, we searched everywhere we could for them, and no matter what we did, we couldn’t find them. It surprised me when Brigid went missing, I knew how much she loved Bedwyr, and she was happy too, well as far as I knew.”
“Then why did she leave?”
“That’s a million dollar question I can’t answer.”
“Would you and Pop ever consider coming back to Vale Valley? I don’t want us to go years and not see each other.”
His dad sighed. “I don’t know, son, your pop and grandmother are just so damn stubborn.”
“What really happened between them, dad? I know what you guys told me over the years isn’t the truth or the whole story.”
“You’re right it’s not, and I guess I might as well tell you everything.”
“About time.”
“Yeah, I know, and honestly, it shouldn’t even be that big of a secret. Your dad blames himself for his father’s death, and for a short time your grandmother did as well.”
“What? Why? Granddad’s death was an accident.”
“Try telling your pop that. The night of the storm he was on duty with your grandfather, he was on the other side of town helping some of the residents; your grandmother was coordinating it all. As organized as your grandmother is that night chaotic, every able body was trying to lend a hand everywhere they could. But during the storm when no one had heard from your grandfather for a couple of hours, Kayne went out to search for him.”
“He was the one that found granddad’s body?”
“Yeah,” Syn said sadly. “Trenton had told your father they should have stuck together that night, but Kayne thought if they split up, they would be able to get to everyone in and out before the worst of the flood happened. No one expected that the storm would hit quicker than it did.”
“Shit.”
“Rosemary was consumed with grief and blamed Kayne for Trenton’s death, forgetting how he might feel about finding his dead father. Days after she apologized but it went on deaf ears, but what hurt more was she asked him to take over as sheriff. He wasn’t in his right mind to accept, so we left. Years later he realized he should have said yes and continued his father’s legacy. He’s too prideful to go back home, and Rosemary is still plagued with guilt for blaming her firstborn with the death of his father.”
“Gods, they are stubborn. How does Pop feel that Uncle LaMarkus is the sheriff?”
“There’s no hard feelings at all. In fact, he’s very proud of him. Kayne encouraged LaMarkus to take the position knowing his little brother would do a better job than him.”
“We need to figure out a way for Nana and Pop to get over the hurt they are going through.”
“I’ve been trying to do that for years, so when you figure it out let me know. I can sympathize with Rose and what she was going through after losing her mate. I don’t know what I would do if I lost your father. That is why you should cherish your mate, son. And I want you to know I’m happy for you, son. Finding your mate brings me nothing but joy, and I know your Pop will be happy as well. And I can’t wait to meet him.”
“I can’t wait for you to meet him too.”
“You sound happy.”
