“I promised you could have the day off,” Duncan finished for him.
Jordan nodded his head. “I spoke with Carrie and made sure she had all of your appointments scheduled in the afternoon.” Begrudgingly, Jordan had developed a good relationship with the woman who got the position he wanted. He wanted to dislike the woman, but she was so fucking nice he couldn’t hate her.
“What time do they need to be there?”
“Around eight thirty. You can’t miss this; they are very excited about going.”
“Okay, I will be back before then, promise.” They stood there again staring at each other.
The image from the kitchen came back to him and Jordan really wanted to forget the promise he made to himself to keep it professional. At least he wasn’t being fired, yet.
Duncan backed away. “I’m going to get going.”
“Yeah, okay.” Jordan went to close the door but was stopped hearing Duncan call his name.
“Jordan.”
“Yeah.”
“Have a good night,” Duncan whispered, but Jordan had the strangest feeling the other man was going to say something else.
“You too.” This time he was able to close the door. He leaned his forehead against the door.I need to start looking for another job. I’m falling for my straight boss. Bronx was right, sometimes I leap before I look. Shit, I can already hear him say “I told you so.”
Duncan walked into the warehouse, Blayze was standing by the sink washing his hands. Shit was getting out of control. He hated the feeling that he had no control over the situation. He had people depending on him to protect them. Duncan had no idea what was going on. There were too many things happening all at once for it to be a coincidence. It was more guessing and speculations of what could be going on. He and his pack had coexisted peacefully with the other sects. If another group was behind this, Duncan was ready to kill to protect his pack. He looked over at Charlie sleeping on the bed. He had bandages wrapped around his chest.
“How is he?” he asked Blayze.
Blayze turned and leaned against the sink drying his hands. “He’ll live, a couple cracked ribs, and I got the bullet before it got close to his heart.” He sighed then threw the napkin in the trash. “He should be able to shift in a couple of hours once he regains some of his strength.”
“Was it a silver bullet?”
“No, that’s the good news,” Blayze answered.
“So, what’s the bad?” Duncan asked.
They both snapped their heads to the side when they heard a loud scream coming from the other room.
“That,” he said, pointing to the locked door down the hall.
“Fuck, let me go before they kill him.”
Blayze chuckled and nodded his head. “Hey,” he said, stopping Duncan. “Tell them not to mess him up too much, I’m fucking tired as hell and I’m not in the mood to stitch up anybody else.”
“Will do, Doc. Try and get some rest, this might take a while.”
The bunker was used during the great war between the sects, when his father was the Alpha of the pack. It was used as a safe zone and a makeshift hospital. It took a beating over the years, but it was still used as a safe haven or a temporary holding zone for shifters who petitioned to join his pack. Duncan opened the door just as Sebastian sent a punch to their prisoner. Parker was walking around the small room taunting the hunter.
“You should just tell us what we want to hear, because he can go on all night!” Parker yelled. “I’m not sure you’ll be able to handle it.”
The hunter didn’t say anything; his face was bloody and bruised and he wore a sickening smile on his damn face. Either the guy enjoyed pain, or he knew absolutely nothing. Duncan didn’t recognize the hunter. Sebastian went to hit him again and Duncan stopped him. “Enough, Sebastian.” His arm froze halfway and Duncan could see he was holding back from disobeying his order. Duncan let out a warning growl and Sebastian stepped back, but his eyes never left the hunter. The hunter smiled, then turned it into a cackle and then a coughing fit the minute he saw Duncan. Blood coated his pearly white teeth, Duncan shook his head,Sebastian must have been holding back if the man still has teeth in his mouth.
“Well, well, the big bad Alpha, Duncan Pryde,” the hunter mocked after getting his coughing fit under control.
Duncan walked closer into the room and over towards the hunter. He crossed his muscular arms over his chest. “So you know who I am?” Duncan stared at the hunter, upon closer inspection he recognized the man.
“We know who all the important players are, as much as you try to hide your animalistic nature, we can see right through you.”
“Then if you know who and what we are, then you know I won’t hesitate to kill you, Kallen,” Duncan said to him and he could see a slight bit of fear and surprise in his eyes. “You said you wanted to talk to me, here I am, talk.”
