Duncan looked up and their eyes connected, he saw the sincerity in Jordan’s crimson eyes. Something was going on between them, the air around them felt charged with energy that he could not put into words. It felt as if he was being pulled closer to Jordan. He cleared his throat and looked away. “It’s not your fault, death comes when we least expect it.” He didn’t pull his arm away, even though he knew he should. He enjoyed the way Jordan’s touch felt on his skin. As small as the gesture was, it was giving him comfort.
“That’s true,” he agreed. They sat in silence for a few seconds. “Benjamin and Maddison miss their parents. They are hurting just as much as you are.”
“I know,” he sighed. Duncan could tell how much they missed their parents. There were a few times he listened in on the conversations the twins would have with Jordan and they would mention the fun things that they used to do with their mom and dad, that they wished they could do the same with him. He had a theory after Benjamin told him that Jordan smelled like his mom. The kids needed the comfort that Duncan couldn’t give them that Jordan obviously could. “I never saw myself as a parent, to tell you the truth.” He chuckled but it sounded hollow. “Mari always wanted kids, I remember the day she told me she was pregnant. I swear she was going to jump out of her skin with how happy she was.”
“Tell me about her.”
“She was my angel on earth as she is watching over me now. She loved to laugh and was a practical joker. She was a troublemaker. When we were kids, she wanted to cut her hair as short as mine. She didn’t like the fact that I was allowed to climb trees and do things boys were allowed to do. No matter how many times my mom told her no, she still demanded.” Duncan chuckled, remembering that after his mom told Mari no for probably about the five hundredth time, she took matters into her own hands and chopped off a good amount of her hair. “I see so much of her strength and resolve in Maddison and her compassion in Benjamin.” He fiddled with the coffee cup on the counter top. “Other than my parents, she was the only one I wanted to be proud of me, you know? I’m the oldest by a couple of minutes. But she always had my back.” He looked at Jordan, who was staring at him intently. “Do you have someone like that for you?”
“Yeah, I do,” Jordan whispered, then licked his lips. Duncan followed the movement and his mind started to wonder things he shouldn’t, like if they were as soft and sweet as they looked.
Shit, what the hell am I doing? I really need to get laid.
He got up and walked around the counter and rinsed his cup. Jordan did as well as he came and stood beside Duncan, who turned and looked at him. They stared at each other and again the air intensified. It felt as if his body was being pulled closer to Jordan and he couldn’t stop it no matter if he wanted to. Jordan licked his lips again and Duncan did the same. He wanted to taste Jordan’s lips just once. Feel his lips against his, hear sweet, delicious moans escaping his lips, knowing that he was the one that pulled the sound from the other man’s lips. He was leaning closer to the other man; their faces only a couple of inches apart. He could feel Jordan’s breath ghosting his waiting lips. One of Jordan’s hands touched his arm and the heat generating from it sent electricity down his spine.
The phone rang, immediately breaking the spell that was pulling them together, causing them to instantly pull away. Duncan closed his eyes and reached into his pocket and looked at the screen. He creased his brows at who was calling him that late at night. He turned off the water and answered the phone.
“Parker, what’s up?” he answered, looking back at Jordan, who was walking, or actually running, out of the kitchen.Shit, I was about to fuck up, and badly.
“Alpha, my apologies for calling so late, but we have a problem.”
“What is it?”
“We got into an altercation with two guys from the Blackburn Organization. We caught one, but the other one got away. Charlie was hit.”
“Is he okay? Where are you?”
“We’re in the bunker; Blayze is working on Charlie right now.” His voice shook as he spoke. The brothers were close, only one year apart.
“Do you need me there?”
Parker sighed, “As a matter of fact the prisoner is asking to speak with you.”
“Give me fifteen minutes.”
“Okay, I need to get back before Sebastian kills the man before we can get any information out of him.”
Duncan hung up and ran up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He grabbed a shirt and his keys off the dresser. That was what he needed, maybe beating the shit out of some fool would help him forget what the hell was about to happen in the kitchen.
Fuck…fuck…fuck!Jordan paced his room cursing his stupidity. What was I thinking? Shit, I’m going to be fired. He sat on the edge of his bed and grabbed his pillow covering his mouth and was about to scream when there was a knock at his door. “Who is it?”
Who else do you think it is, stupid? He’s coming to fire you. Get ready to pack your bags. All you had to do was keep your shit together!
“Hey, Jordan, I need to run out for a bit. I’m not sure if I will be home in time for breakfast…” Jordan got up from the bed and opened the door. Duncan was fully dressed.
“Is everything alright?” He was worried, that was the second time since working for Duncan that the man had to leave in the middle of the night.
“Yeah, yeah, a friend needs me to help him with something.”
“This late?” It was almost two in the morning.
“It’s hard to explain. But I won’t be home in time for breakfast.”
“But you need to be here,” Jordan told him. “Did you forget what tomorrow is?”
Duncan looked confused for a second before it dawned on him. “Shit, the twins start kindergarten tomorrow.”
“Yup, and you promised that you would drop them off and pick them back up. And…”
